I have discovered how easy baked beans are to make from scratch, if rather time consuming. Got some dried haricot beans and soaked some overnight, then boiled them for an hour. Then placed them in an ovenproof dish with some brown sugar, passata sauce and a bit of ketchup and cooked for half an hour on a medium heat. Going to do it again tomorrow as have loads of beans left. I also got some dried adzuki beans, some of which went in a vegetable stew and some more will be used in some veggie burgers. I'm thinking of making them with the beans, some oats, some grated carrot and minced onion and binding them with tomato puree.
I've made some Yorkshire puddings and frozen them and also some pizza dough, using a mixture of plain, self raising and bread flours as I was nearly at the end with all three bags. Should have enough for about two pizza bases, enough to cover two dinner plates and have tomato puree, dried herbs and cheese so just need a couple of toppings to add on. Also got some soya mince, used some in a vegetarian(ish) shepherds pie today. I say "ish" because it had gravy with it, as well as the soya mince, some diced carrot, oats and mashed potatoes and served with peas and pickled red cabbage.
We're having the remains of the shepherds pie and home made baked beans tomorrow and then soya mince with potatoes, bolognaise sauce and grated cheese either for tea tomorrow or Friday. Will make the veggie burgers next I think and serve them with roast potatoes and peas.

DH's auntie seemed to feel a bit better for having five females all around her when we visited. The funeral will be on Monday and it looks as if all our four DDs will be able to go.

Her sister who normally would have been there to support her appears to have Altzheimers and did not seem to realise who it was that had died when we went to visit her.

The flowers we had ordered arrived while we were there so DD helped arrange them.

Having a quiet New Year at home - bought some Mand S party stuff and a bottle of Cava and making home made potato wedges and dip to go with it.

DD(19) enjoyed the sweet potato soup I made in the Remoska earlier on. Am trying to get as many veg down her as I can to build her up a bit for her return to uni and her exams.

I have no idea why the font just changed!!!!

Happy New Year to everyone and let's hope it is a better one than this!!!!

Evening everyone, hope you are all getting into the preparations for tonight....if you are doing any. I don't really do new year but was working this morning, OH picked me up at 2 with DSD and informed me we were going out for lunch. Was very nice as very unexpected.

DSD has a friend here tonight and OH's eldest son wants to come over so OH has been shopping and got nibbly bits, very un OS as I usually make them all, but very nice to have a day off. He did point out to me that anything he got was on offer :D I will make an OSer of him yet:D

Happy New Year to everyone, and hope if this year has been not so good for you, next year will be better.

    Cyas soon xxxx

  • Just wanted to wish everyone a happy, peaceful, healthy and worry free New Year.
Especial wishes for those with job and health worries.

I have spent most of today asleep after working last night, DS 18 cooked a nice quorn pasta dish for tea and now I am off to work again. I wonder if I'll get to deliver a New Year Baby ? It seems a very positive time to have a new life somehow.

    Love and hugs

Haven't caught up with today's thread yet, I have just read some of yesterdays. I haven't been around or posting much because sadly my Dad died totally out of the blue on Christmas Saturday. I didn't post because I didn't want to bring people down. Anyway I'm posting now because smokybabe has noticed my absence. Bless you:A I'm coming to terms with it, and am incredibly busy trying to sort things out, from 200 miles away a bit difficult. I won't have internet access for the next couple of days as I'll be at Dad's house, to register the death and start sorting. He's with Mum now and will be much happier for that.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year.

  • Hello Friends,

It's good to finally be almost caught up on the threads here. I honestly believe I could sit here for 24 hours and still be behind in my reading. :rotfl:

I got the flat tidied and hoovered today. The Christmas decorations are still up and will probably stay that way until the weekend. We put ours up late this year so I'm going to enjoy them for a while longer yet.

Very cold here today also. Right now it's at -2 and it's been foggy most of the day. DH and I were talking about how much colder the flat seems this winter. Then he pointed out the obvious that it has been much colder outside this year for longer periods of time. ;)

We are staying in tonight. DH is having a nap now. Being outside in the cold all day seems to sap all his energy. Add to that he's walking many miles on his beat each day and it's no wonder he's so tired.

Dinner is in the oven and about done. Au gratin potatoes with onions and ham in them. Will put a green veg on to cook to go along with. Just pulled a pan of brownies out of the oven. I put some choc chips and chopped walnuts in for a change of pace. The apple crisp that is baking is also about done. If I can just stay away from them, I'll have desserts for about a week. Chances of me staying out of them? Somewhere between slim and none. :p

Tilli (and anyone else new) Welcome to OS. The best place you can find on the net. Everyone has been so warm and welcoming to me and I'm sure you'll find it that same.

Frugalswan It's a bit late now, but perhaps you can get a wee nap before you go to your party? I don't care for it when I'm tired and can't go to bed either. I'm a grump then.

Yorkshire Chick It's way past lunch time at this point so too late for today, but... There is a voucher on here for 50% off your eat in order at Pizza Hut for future reference. I don't know if you can combine that with other vouchers, it's worth an ask if you still have more vouchers to use.

Freebiequennie There is indeed an OS Weight Loss thread here. You can find it here

I saw this online today and just wanted to share with you if you'd like. Just a small New Year Blessing

Many have suffered tragedies and hard times this year. The heart wrenching loss of loved ones, loss of job/income, the loss of relationships, illness, sadness and loneliness. With that in mind, I want to wish each of you here a Peace filled, Prosperous, Healthy, Happy and Blessed New Year.

With lots of gentle hugs for all
