Most of the big stores will have special 'sales stock' produced for them. It's over 8 years now since I worked in the manufacturing side of a major clothing brand, and even then it was common practice to produce special lines for the sales - and this was for bigger names than Next or M&S.

But whether it's happening more now, or whether we are just more attuned to the cost of things these days, I don't know.

I know that Millets have special sales stock shipped in, so I'd assume that Blacks (who are the same company) would do the same, but I could be wrong.

I agree Next do not have genuine sales all the time, most of it is last seasons clothes and usually only the big sizes are left. And why is it that in sales all the clothes get dropped on the floor and nobody picks them up? Not even the staff pick them up. I will only buy something in a sale, when I am sure the price is right for the item.

Having worked in River Island for about 5 huge sales, (and I can only imagine its a similar case with Next) I can say here that they do not "drop" to the floor- in any store, they are thrown on the floor- or more correctly, not put back properly, by customers, and no matter how hard staff work, just one customer can cause enough work by slinging stuff over other clothes or "putting stuff back" (on the floor) to keep them tied up hanging stuff for a very long time.

Some stores give up in the end and just tidy once an hour, its really demorolising for staff otherwise.

I'd knock Next off your genuine list too. Unless they've changed recently.

A friend used to be Saturday staff there. 99% of the Sale stuff was delivered in specially and none of it was stuff they normally sold.

It is stuff they have sold in the past, isnt the idea of a sale to unload old stock ?

As long as you like the item and its a good price what the problem ?

    Shops offering few genuine reductions

Tesco (all those wine offers reduced from £7.99 to £3.99 - but the wine isn't worth anymore than £3.99)

I agree - Tesco a complete rip-off. Their blue nun was £3-59 a bottle. Now they have put it up to £3-99 and advertised as a sale of 3 bottles for £10. What a con!!

Disney stores sale seemed genuine, all the goods I bought were all full price on the net in the couple of months before christmas.

Monsoon sale is misleading. I wanted to buy a skirt which was £32 full price it was in the 1/2 price sale section. When I went to the till it scanned at £21 pounds. When I showed the shop assistant a whole row of skirts with "1/2 price sale" above them she told me it "1/2 price" and "sale". Some items are half price and some are in the sale!!!
I left it and hope its 70% off in a few days when they don't sell.:D

Topshop seems pretty geuine, but this is probably as they seem to do the same thing each year: all knitwear=£18 every year, all jeans seem to be 50% off and so on, you can almost predict what it will cost in the sale/what the reduction will be when it first comes out!

They do reduce again too, but tend to draw it out as long as humanly possible, about 2 years ago haveing one sale, ending it, then following on with a second sale the following week!

They used to do buy one get one free but I didn't see this last season so am not sure if its still happening.
  • Argos - Sony 32 Inch Bravia LCD TV - £342.54 claimed to be less than half price.
It spent a lot of last year priced at under £500, then the price was ramped up in November to £699. They have flown off the shelves, I'm told.

Dont they have to have it on sale at full price for so long?

I think I read somewhere recently that the rules have changed and now items don't have to have been on sale at their full price for a set amount of time anymore before they can be put 'on sale'. Just been looking on Consumer Direct however, and can't find anything on there about it.
