I don't get these "anti retail store" threads that seem to appear every time sale time comes around.
It is because retailers are trying to pull over our eyes that people are trying to warn us off them with specific examples. I can't believe this is not so obvious. I know of plenty of friends who are hugely irritated by Tesco's fake sale items and love nothing more than to have a huge whinge about it. If nothing else it makes us feel a bit better.

This whole website is about being commercially aware and financially savvy - by alerting one another to these tactics, we can learn how to make the most sensible choices when shopping in the sales. Any bargain hunter is naturally drawn to that sexy red label with "70% off" scrawled across it, but we have to teach ourselves that the label may actually be deceiving...

House of Fraser lost my custom today -forever.
On Friday my husband found a jacket on a clearance rack reduced from £175 to £40. When we went to pay for it, it came up as £180 less 20% = £144. The guy who was called over to check the price was unable to offer any explaination as to why the tag didn't match the till other than they have lots of problems with people trying to change the prices themselves. He said this repeatedly and I got the distinct impression he thought we were trying to rip off HoF. He said it was new stock and there's no way it was on clearance. He went through the price history on the till and told us that the jacket was originally £175, it went up to £180 in the beginning of Oct, and then there was a 20% off campaign. We left disgusted. When we got home we checked their website and discovered that similar jackets of the same brand were on clearance reduced from £195 to £60. I called and spoke to the mensware department manager this morning in the hopes that someone would consider the possibility that it was old stock and that was why the original price was less that that of the current stock. No luck. The manager repeated the price history. I was flabbergasted that two staff members admitted to HoF raising the price before a promotion! That coupled with the fact that neither one of them took any notice of the questions I had about the price or their pricing policy made me decidet that I don't need to do business with them any more.

"Creative" pricing doesn't just happen at Christmas

Last month I bought two books from amazon for £9.99 and £4.99. Said books are now £14.99 and £5.76!! They are not trying to sell them as sale items.. but still pays to be aware.

I reckon it would be worth waiting a short while til after the sales have finished and then going out to buy what you want. The retailers are just cashing in on the 'sales' at present but will really need our cash in a month or two! Thats when the bargains will really begin.

Saying that, I did pick up a genuine bargain in Oasis yesterday.. a bag reduced from £38 to £20! Glad I waited as I was so tempted to buy it last year.

I actually got a genuine bargain today and I'm still reeling in shock! Popped into primark and they were selling a £25 jacket I've been eyeing up for weeks for £10. To be it really is a bargain cos I loved it when it was full- priced but didn't have the dosh!
Primark is one of the few shops that do do genuine sales
