Are the reductions genuine? Naming and Shaming thread

We've all seen signs saying that a certain item was at the full price for 28 days in 3 of its stores. All too often, the item is deliberately priced too high to sell at the "full" price, but at a reduced price it's just about reasonable. People are fooled by this technique but are starting to realise it's not what it seems.

Another problem is that shops buy in lower quality sale stock, rather than just reducing what they had in.

Shops offering mostly Genuine reductions

John Lewis (anything they buy in for the sale is clearly marked "Special Purchase")
Waitrose
Next
M&S

Shops offering some genuine reductions

Clarks (some genuine reductions but are all their sale shoes the same quality?)
Debenhams
House of Fraser

Shops offering few genuine reductions

Tesco (all those wine offers reduced from £7.99 to £3.99 - but the wine isn't worth anymore than £3.99)
Woolworths (I mean before the closing down sale)

I look forward to your comments

  • I agree. I was looking for some items of furniture in the sales online and was searching on line using various phrases such as "sale furniture" ect and was directed to the ARGOS website where they had taken a whole ONE POUND off of a whole range of dark brown wooden furniture!! SInce when has such a measly amount constituted a sale?! and yes - some items did appear to be 'half price' but there are so many that falsly inflate the price then as you say - mark it down to a normal price! I've also noticed that some TV adverts are stating things like "REAL GENUINE SALE". It's like - well. were your previous sales not genuine???!

Madness - but I think we are getting more switched on to these companies..which will hopefully force them into having real 'genuine' sales!!!!

  • BHS have a large range of glass/crystal ornaments this year. I bought one for £9 in december. It's now on sale at £10.

Argos is infuriating. Most of the sale stock on their website is actually just normal priced stock with the new vat cut.

But when it comes to ripping off the public with fake sales, the retailers dedicated to selling furniture make Argos look like a choir boy.
Everyone knows it and their adverts are almost rubbing our faces in it but there are people out there who continue to buy from these places even though they know full well that the sales are on almost all year round.
Step forward and hang you heads in shame, DFS, SCS, Land Of Leather, Harveys etc.

still think superdrug wins this award hands down- they announced a mega 90% off sale, even went as far as to list products and their reduction prices before the sale was to start on xmas day on the net, then boxing day for the stores. But at the very last minute, changed their mind. Declined from having a sale on the website and then limited the sale to a few stores. Sure there were some (out of date) 49p deals to be had, but none of the luxary makeup or skin care as was advertised. And quite a few stores were selling the said reduced products at full price. On a separate thread here a poster said she went in with her list/press cutting and had to demand the item was sold at its offered price- how nice! we now have to ask for the advertised products to be priced as advertised?! what next!!

What they do not realise is they really have let down many customers here, many people now have a sour taste in their mouths after the "sale". Boots however did live up to expectation. One No.7 Cosmetic box was £18 reduced from £70 on the first day of the sale- beat that Superdrug!

SD are risking administration by doing stupid stunts like this! I hope the promotional management team learn their lesson here!

Even John Lewis can be a bit dubious. In October, I bought a printer for my laptop for £64.95. Not on sale. Before Christmas, they were charging £117 and now it`s half price in their sale.

Debenhams definately has a lot of ladies dresses on it's website that are more expensive now than they were before Christmas. They are 30-50% off now and they were 70% off before
  • B & Q kitchen cabinets half price. We priced a kitchen in Summer and went along to find that all the prices had doubled since the Summer brochure, so the 50% off just makes them the same price
You're only young once, but you can be immature forever :D

Dont they have to have it on sale at full price for so long?

Edit: Just found out you apparently have to spend £50 or more to get the 50% discount so excuses it from the rule

    great thread
    SIMPLES!
  • I always considered myself very price-savvy... but I didn't find out about Tesco's scam until I got a part-time job there pricing up the shelves! Was shocked and appauled one morning when I was asked to remove the "sale" prices and replace them with identical ones that didn't have "sale" marked on them
