Older children paying keep

Think all working 'children' should pay towards their keep. Many of these children earn as much as their parents. Welcome to the big wide World where you have to pay your way. I paid my parents when I started work at 16 and it taught me to appreciate the value of money. Too many youngsters can't handle money because they've never been taught the value of money and how to budget. They can buy designer labels etc.,but can't contribute to the home they live in. Sorry but think some of them are just plain ruined and need a reality check.PolishBigSpender wrote: »Good on you not charging him.
No wonder British society is breaking down when parents are charging their children rent. Whatever happened to family values in the UK?0 -
That's terrible. He's taking advantage of you but can well understand you can do without all the agro. The joy of children, so glad I decided not to have any when I hear stories like this. Can't believe he's not paying you anything for his keep, he really is on a cushy number. Shame on him.Pops68 I have a similar problem except mine left home when he married but unfortunately the marriage ended and he is now back home.
He says he can't afford to pay anyjting but still has £70 pw to pay on going out etc.
If I ask him for any he gets in a snit and makes life miserable.
I had a stoke a few years back amd can't cope with the stress so I sympathise with you wholeheartedly.0 -
£100 a month - that is what i was paying my mum when i got my first full time job in th 80's - that is not unreasonable!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

Threads like this make me realise just how lucky I am. I've just turned 25, but am back at home with my parents and my younger brother (22). I had a part-time job from 16, never had to pay board when I was in education but as soon as I started earning with my part-tiem job I paid for all of my clothes, nights out, etc. My brother was exactly the same.
I lived at home through uni, then after I finished uni aged 22 I went away to work for a year. Came back home to mam and dad cos I found a better job back here and this is where I really wanted to be. Since I've been back here I've been paying £200 pcm board. Recently got a pay rise and wanted to pay more but my mam won't take it!
I also make a concious effort to save half of my earnings every month, which should hopefully eventually go towards a deposit.
My brother recently finished uni but is only working 26 hours per week in a local supermarket until he decides what he wants to do - might eventually move in with his g/f. Because he's not earning a full-time wage my mam doesn't charge him board, but this doesn't bother me.
I actually feel guilty that I'm paying such a low amount of board, but try as I might my mam won't take any more. I know for a fact that my parents aren't actually spending my board, it goes in my mam's savings account, and they both earn decent wages so it's not like they desperately need more money off me, but I'm sure it costs more for them to keep me than I'm actually paying!OS weight loss challenge: 4.5/6 lbs0
