Can I be cheeky and ask if you'd mind if I added my progress etc to this thread? I'm fed up of living where we are, and am desperate to move back to where my family all are etc and where there are better work prospects for OH, but we need money for a house deposit first.
Ideally, we would want around £15k saved, but since that's the amount of OH's salary and I can't work, I think that's being overoptimistic! So I'll aim for £10k this year. Always shoot for the moon, yes? because if you miss at least you'll end up among the stars.
If you say it's okay me joining your thread, Cocalls, I'll put a SOA on here later and hope people can help me see anywhere to cut down.Saving for a house deposit.

just popping in on lunch hr (just back from popping into bank to put cheque in)
No problem Kaida the more the merrier, great to have you on board I was saying to my OH the other day that even if we 'fail' on this quest we'll still have won as we'll have more money saved than we ever will before!
Going to cinema tonight (241 w/ orange) & pizza express beforehand (also 241 voucher)0 -
Right. OH was too tired last night to help me write up the SOA, so we'll try and do that tonight.
From OH's salary we should be able to save maybe £50-100 a month.
Then from my income, around £3500 over the year for IB, and around £900 over the year for DLA.
We're trying to get a lodger. Around here, a room in a shared student house rents for generally £200 plus bills. Is this reasonable for a lodger to pay? It's a nice room, big, recently decorated, in an okay area.
Then I'm going to OS to try and save little extras throughout the weeks, and Ebay a bunch of stuff. Every little helps, right?Saving for a house deposit.

the lodger idea is a good idea i would have thought you could get a bit more if you can get that in a student house.

Wow this saving malarky is easy innit?
Im in the process of getting car insurance quotes (and getting paid £2 each time thr quidco) so it looks like that will be going down nxt month too.
I think HSBC are going to lower their interest rates on their mortgage so it'll all get chucked at the savings account.0 -
Hi Cocalls
We are also trying to save for a deposit and earn a similar amount to you and your OH so hope we can spur each other on!
We are really trying to cram savings in this year, really hoping for some overtime!!
I actually get my salary deposited into my savings account (a rubbish one but it's instant access and linked to my current account so I can look at both on the same internet banking page lol, that really helps me visualise where I am, sounds silly I know) Then I transfer what I think I will need to my current account. I have turned over a bit of a new leaf with spending during the day, going ok so far with bringing a packed lunch and curbing lunchtime spending.
I have also tried to make a head start on this year's presents for birthdays and even christmas by buying in the sales, I then hope to be able to transfer more to the savings account each month.
