  • I hope so too!! Really want to get back into work, especially as xmas is round the corner. x
  • Hi all,

First time poster here, wanting to chime in over my own frustrating experiences.

I've been unemployed for a while now, lost my job due to the state of the economy and had a tough time getting a new one. Applied for an EO position in the Bristol area, IRC 62421, and managed to pass the tests and then the competency interviews. A letter was sent to me on the 18th informing me that that I was successful and they'd be starting pre-recruitment checks.

The letter didn't say anything about merit lists or waiting lists, so I think I am on the former - the list of 'definites' from that particular interviewing batch. Which is nice, but from here on things don't go so well :p

I wanted to ring them up to make basic inquiries - how long would the checks take, when would the job start, etc - except that the number I had been given was always either busy, or just left to ring indefinitely. Then I started to search online, found this thread, and had my worry-o-meter wound right up :(

Using a different number I got from this thread, I managed to contact someone today at the employee resourcing dept, and they at least gave me some answers - but they also told me that Jobseekers was now undertaking a 'review' of its staff recruitment procedures, which is presumably the 'freeze' that others have referred to in this thread earlier. Specifically, the woman at the DWP said it might be that they've now recruited lots of people and need to figure out if they have any vacancies left. I was told that they should know by the beginning of November whether more recruitments will go ahead.

And of course then I come back to this thread and see that someone above was told the 'freeze' was lifted, and they're now clearing the backlog.

I am unhappy and frustrated at the unclear communication over this - for those of us who are unemployed, a job opportunity like this becomes a really important matter. And the thing is, I need to keep applying for jobs and trying to get interviews, since my supposed successful application turns out not to be such a sure thing after all.

After all the conflicting info over the 'freeze', I am now totally unsure as to whether I might get a job offer in the next few weeks or not, and this is important as I might be getting other offers soon too. I'd rather take the EO position for various reasons, but if I can't rely on the DWP to give me good info, I may end up having to take a worse job elsewhere. Worst of all, after I got the 'successful' letter about this, I stopped doing fresh applications until today because I mistakenly thought my job search had finally come to an end - I may have wasted valuable time.

    Blargh. Just needed to vent.
  • Here i am again, i have just managed to speak to a very helpfull person at Newcastle, that has just told me the freeze was lifted on Monday, and the delay now is just the backlog, not being helped by the postal strike.

Also being joint 4th on the list I asked where i was overall, and he said 7th, but the person in 6th has failed the CRB check so i am now 6th as all my checks have come back ok. So my information has been passed on and he said wait for a call from your line manager. So things look like they are moving again WHOOHOO.

hi there, thanks for the update think you should change your name though ha :)

10th September was the date of the competency interviews, I think - there were the exams a week or two prior to that.

When I got the success letter, I must admit that I've been so ground down by rejections and failed applications that I couldn't even get very excited about it and kept on wondering how I might yet somehow get rejected - and thank God for that, because this would be even more agonising if I had been more optimistic :p
