I first applied to DWP in July 2007. I went for tests August 2007 then interview in September 2007 (I had just started another job by then, 6mths temporary). I passed all the tests/interviews and was told I'd be put on a waiting list. In February 2008 I received a phone call asking me if I was still interested in working for DWP and I said no because I had by then been taken on permanently (earning less than DWP but quite happy). I thought this would be the end of DWP's interest in me. In July 2008 I got another call asking me if I was still interested in working for DWP. I said yes because I was beginning to struggle a bit on my income and decided a couple of grand extra a year would come in handy. I started work in the local jobcentre in September 2008 where I still work. After 3-4 days 'training' (being sat in front of a computer reading useless and instantly forgettable information), and 5 days watching someone sign people on (FJR they call it) I was put on the front line signing people on. The only course I have been on is 'keeping safe' which is supposed to equip you to deal with irate customers. In my experience, the customers are the acceptable part of the job because the vast majority are decent, honest people who are victims of the recession.

All I can advise is LOOK FOR ALTERNATIVE WORK. I know that is particularly hard in the present climate but it's the best advice I can give. If you don't mind sitting behind a desk spouting utter !!!!!!!! for 8 hours a day and pretending that there are plenty of jobs out there.... this is the job for you.

  • Thanks for all the info on this thread guys.

I'm in the same position as a lot of you, applied...heard nothing for a month or so. Then was invited to tests which i passed with 13/15 in the literacy and 20/20 in the numeracy. Was handed an envelope with an interview time and a bunch of forms to fill in. Completed them and took along my passport etc to my interview. Then i received a letter saying congratulations...you're on a waiting list! Argh, waiting list=not congratulations :(.

In my personal case i suspect i'll be quite far down the waiting list, since i have a health problem that i'm waiting for an operation to resolve. It doesn't affect my day to day life but they requested details if you're under the care of a specialist/have been to the hospital for anything etc etc.

Does anyone know if it's possible for me to phone and ask to be considered for other similar roles in my area?
  • Had interview for CSA passed but low and behold on the waiting list. Had one following week for Benefits Agency and after two weeks got reply and all the forms and other relevant paperwork to fill in. First intake at beginning of April, so providing the checks come back ok which they will ....BINGO!

Face to face customer service for a local authority in one of their Local Service Centres.
  • Reckon Sigrid and Phil445 should bury the hatchet you both have valuable input for people seeking answers.

As a CSA EO going for a JC+ EO external board I was wondering how jobs are allocated within such a massive recruitment?
Are there any considerations or queries as to suitable locations or preferred jobs etc or is it done by some arcane HR ritual involving human sacrifice? :D
    Nothing to see here

your a bit impatient lol!! could take months love!
I was told at interview they would try and notify everyone within two weeks. It won't take months for these jobs, as was the way in the past, because the demand is immediate and huuuuuuuge.
  • I was thinking i'd been waiting for ages but i think it's actually about 5 weeks. My god they've dragged!

Sigrid- Just wondering if you could tell me if my health thing will have affected my place on the list or not? Could it just be that it's taking longer while they contact my consulant or whatever they need to do?! (good luck with that if they are, took me 3 weeks to reschedule an appointment! ;) )

    xx
  • Fair enough, I'm kind of figuring it will just go against me. New question, if I've still not heard after I've had my operation and my health condition is therefore no longer an issue can i request a new health declaration form that's more up to date? xx
