I bought two bags of grated cheese yesterday because it worked out cheaper per kg (was on offer) than even Morrisons own brand stuff. It's the Cathedral City so not quite as rubbery as i've experienced before.

For me, bags of ready-to-use salad leaves (prepped with some sort of gas so they remain crispy). Compare their price any time to a fresh lettuce - on the same shelf! - and see who wins.

I buy these instead of an iceberg (have you seen the price of an iceberg lately?) usually only when it's got money knocked off though, and it's because i live alone with my 5 year old who hates lettuce so it's only used for salads for work or sandwiches and works out cheaper, especially if it has other stuff in it like peppers etc.
  • I do buy those sometimes to get a mixture without having to buy several different lettuces :o:o The OS part of me weeps though.

Imagine how much smaller supermarkets would be if all this nonsense didn't exist.

As one of the many, many million single households in this country, these sorts of products mean I CAN have a variety of foods. A bag of salad means I DON'T have to buy four types of leaves and chuck half of them away or live with just one flipping endless iceberg lettuce. So, long live the bagged salads that last!

well my sister buys ready grated cheese!

I do as well as price/lb it's the cheapest cheese that the supermarket sell.

Mysupermarket.co.uk is a quick and easy way of price checking before you go shopping (you can print your shopping list off before you go too).

I think Subway sandwiches are very overpriced, £3 odd for a sandwich!! And that's only the small ones! But I must admit, I love them :o One is about to open near me and I really don't want to start going a lot but the smell of it will lure me in :rotfl:

Somebody said about the small pots of jelly earlier...I totally agree. I was in Mr T's once and saw a tub of jelly, I can't remember how much it was, lets say 40p and next to it was a pack of jelly that would make about 10 of those pots for about 50p  Needless to say I bought the pack and scoffed the lot :o :rotfl:

I have to 3rd or 4th the pots of jelly comment.

I had my DD's 5th birthday party a couple of months ago ... and they were about 40p per pot (30 kids) , or my totally daft calcs of 10 packets at 40p each .... so I still have 5 packs left .. and it fed the lot of them plus adults ....

Iceberg lettuce bores me senseless, but I needed it for my "prawn cocktail" starter for Christmas .. supermarket slightly browning bag of it .. 2pound .... one whole totally fresh lettuce .. 52p ...

Just what do I do with the leftover lettuce. .... yawn ;)

  • I buy those bags of mixed leaf lettuce too sometimes - but I make sure I buy the ones marked 'washed only in spring water' after reading 'Not on the Label' ...or get unwashed ones if I can find them.

Iceberg for me is tasteless (fine for prawn cocktail or in a burger but otherwise useless) and while I will usually get rocket which is cheaper than the mixed bags (but still ridiculously overpriced!) sometimes, like last weekend for example I had a chicken for the Sunday roast and some spuds for roasties but I just wanted a nice leafy mixed salad to go with it after all the excesses of Xmas. So I winced at the price but bought it anyway and with a homemade salad dressing (olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, dijon mustard, drop of honey) it was delicious. If I bought 4 different lettuces they would just end up going mouldy in the bottom of the fridge as I was only cooking for myself.

What I did discover this year (first time I had a garden in the past 6 years) was how easy it is to grow cut and come again salad leaves during the summer (including rocket) - didn't have to buy salad leaves for 5 months and it was so good just to go and cut your own ultra fresh mixed salad leaves to have with dinner each night. The slugs got way more than their fair share but for the same price as just 1 bag of leaves in the supermarket I got a packet of mixed salad leaf seeds and had salads all summer long (sowing a window box every 2 to 3 weeks so I had a constant supply). Will definately do this again next spring/summer/autumn but they don't grow in the Scottish winter, so I may be picking up a few more overpriced salad packs before the winter is over... :)

    What about 'bling' chewing gum?

I keep a packet of chewy in the car, usually the 30p stuff. So why are some packets 80p/£1 for the same amount.

    Professional toothcare, my AR$£!
