What's the most overpriced food product that you could make yourself?

I think there are two kinds of mark-up - buying something in a restaurant is different to buying something in a supermarket. in the restaurant you are. hopefully, paying for service, somewhere to sit etc.
Re Canapes and sandwiches. Bear in mind the more likely it is that something was made by hand, the higher the price will be compared to just the raw ingredients because a human being will have been paid to make it.
I think my vote would be for prep'd veg though esp if it's had a splash of olive oil and a few dried herbs sprinkled on it and is being marketed as a side dish!0 -
Ready made pastry, although if my hand is having a bad day (arthritis), I have been known to cave.
Dh is going to teach me to use his food processor that is somewhere in the attic/loft of our house when he is next home from sea, so hopefully that will fix the pastry problem.0 -
My sister in law has always bought things like ready prepared rice, frozen mash, ready prepared cheesy mash but the most shocking thing (for me) that she buys is a bottle of ready beaten eggs at over 3 pounds - you get 4 eggs worth!!!!!!!!0

cinema popcorn!!!! It's a horrendous rip off! Actually all the cinema stuff is a rip off, but the popcorn takes the mickey!
Like others have said, pizza. 2009 I will start making from scratch. I only ever bought the value ones anyway. Any good pizza recipes pm'd to me would be lovely! Cheeky, I know!
Any ready prepared meal.
We love those tortillas, must start making them!

Honestly I kid you not it's in Tesco's. By the milk & overpriced ready prepared milkshakes now I come to think of it. She really does buy it  Maybe if it's not in all the time it'll make an appearance ready for pancake day :mad:0

eww, the thought of ready prepared egg!!!!!!
How hard is it to crack an egg, lol!!!!!!0 -
I have seen egg whites for sale in a tub - can't remember the price. Never seen whole eggs ready cracked but they are quite commonly used in the catering trade.
I do buy ready made pastry sometimes though, I know it's overpriced for what it is but my pastry skills are not great and also I am lazy."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the

For me, bags of ready-to-use salad leaves (prepped with some sort of gas so they remain crispy). Compare their price any time to a fresh lettuce - on the same shelf! - and see who wins."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0
