Marty posted a link a few weeks ago which still put the free version above most other av programs.It was the free one.
Avira scored 95.54%, Avast 93.78% (behind AVG), and NOD32 93.36%.

As I've said before, if you have good e-mail habits e.g. don't open unknown messages, don't run mystery attachments without scanning them, etc. then the free version of AntiVir is probably all you need to keep your computer free of viruses.0 -

1. Go to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe
2. Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security->
3. Under the group or username SYSTEM click edit
4. Put a checkmark under the DENY column for "read and execute"

No good for us poor FAT32 users! I've given up looking for a way to be honest for a FAT32, Windows XP Home machine. In some respects it tells me when it's updated as I've turned off the pop-up box every time it updates. Also turned off the spash screen with /nosplash.0 -
