Its not silly or selfish - you have lost a loved dog and you are grieving for her - its perfectly normal and natural to ask yourself these questions.
14 is a fabulous age for a lab, she must have had a good life, but I know thats not much of a consolation now. I wish I could say something to help, but the pain takes its own time to go, but in time it wll fade and your happy memories of her will remain.
And yes, you did do the kindest thing for her - it was better for her to go quickly rather than have a long and prolonged illness, but its inevitably much more of a shock for you.0 -
We still get her back in 10 days, so she will still be with us. ive got to go sleep now Im exhausted.
Thanks again peeps for all your kind words.0 -
Thanks for all that have contributed to this thread-I too, keep going over things & wondering if we could have done anything differently- we paid £200 to have her put on a drip last night to see if it would give her a boost, but she was just so weary when we saw her, & she was unable to walk any more. She still managed to wag her tail at us, though, which broke my heart. However, you just seem to know when they`ve had enough-after the friend & companion she`s been, particularly to me, then I just had to do that for her, & set her free. Feel so raw, though, & miss her more than words can say.
So true - you would not want your pal to suffer for one moment longer, but it does not lessen the loss. Its natural to question your actions, but it is the final kindness we can do for our dogs.0 -
I'm sorry to hear of your losses. As I sit typing this, with my old Staffy x on the sofa next to me, the puppy in front of the fire, 2 cats slinking around and my beloved Pone a few miles up the road, I shed a tear as I imagine having to lose one of them. Fingers crossed tightly it won't be for a few years yet, but it fills me with such sadness.
I will remember you all in my prayers tonight. To many people they are 'Just a dog/cat/horse/pet', but they are so much more than that. The love, the hopes, the fears, the joy, the shared memories, the optimism. The hours spent in the company of our closest companions. 'Just a pet'? Oh no, so much more than that. Anyone who says that doesn't really understand that, and I pity them - they won't ever experience the sheer, unadulterated, unconditional love that 'just a pet' gives you.0 -

My boy passed away in September and although I still miss him like crazy, it does get easier day by day.
Someone posted this for me when he died and it still wells me up reading it now.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It's a very beautiful quote. I will remember it when my dearest dog passes away... hopefully that day is still far off, but I can see more and more traces that age leaves on her
Thank you.From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -
My heart is breaking for everyones losses! I can't stop crying and my bunny is looking at me like I'm nuts! I've only had him a few weeks but I couldn't be without him, even a little rabbit has filled up a huge space in my heart
You did the most selfless and bravest thing by having her put to sleep, I don't know if I could be strong enough to do it (I realise how much of a bad person this makes me)
I'm so so sorry for your losses, I wish I could take your pain away, take the time to grieve, it does get easier and hurt less but you never forget them xxx0 -
Im so very sorry for everyones losses on here. I still cry about each and every one of my dogs that I have loved over the last 30 odd years. We can only do our very best for them, they deserve that. Its heartbreaking to lose a loved pet - they are so very loving, honest and loyal - you dont find those qualities in many humans in this world.
I hope each of you who has lost a wonderful friend will find it in your hearts to give the same sort of love to another one who needs you. xxx0 -
We lost our old boy on the 26/10, he had a stroke the day before, vet sent him home same day for 29 hours we just sat with him carrying him outside when he needed to go, he just continued looking at us with love, he then had another stroke at 21.15, he went in our arms. He had been with us for 10 years. My heart still breaks at night, still look out for him in the morning, when I come home. Just glad we were there at the end with him. The comments/poems are beautiful, wishing all a happy/happier new year0

No one can ease the emotional pain you're all suffering, but given time it does become easier.
For us, we'd never have another pet, just couldn't cope going through that emotional pain again.
