Is it me or are the sales rubbish?

  • I completely agree with this thread. Where are the bargains? I popped into Asda yesterday and don't think much of their sale. The section of clothes for little girls was very limited, unless you wanted to buy exactly the same cardigan in four colours. Couldn't see any baby clothes in the sale at all. I know that it doesn't say toy sale, but are they not going to reduce their toy prices at all? I've managed to get some great bargains in Next vip but instore was not very good. Got one bargain from Argos, but most stuff seems to have been reduced by the 2% vat decrease.

I had been saying just this to my family yesterday after trawling my nearest city yesterday morning. I was after some curtains and a toilet seat! Was hoping Next would be good for home stuff so got up there early, but nothing! The home bit was practicarly empty! This is definitly not normally! And as for kids clothes, as usual, nothing in DDs size (even though she grows each year, I really cant work that out).
M&S was carp too, as was lakeland, and debenhams and house of fraser had stuff A LOT cheaper before christmas. Also boots had a couple of aisles shut saying these toys werent in the toy sale, Im sure they usually put everything in the sale?? So I gave up and came home pretty much empty handed! Will wait to see if things get cheaper I think before parting with my (well OHs) money! :)

Yes, they're rubbish. Despite the supposedly high percentage price cuts, there was very little on offer.

Judging by the number of people out shopping yesterday (no more than a normal Saturday), and the number carrying bags of shopping (maybe 10%), I'd say the retailers are doomed.

My kid got an XBox game for half price in Woolies, so that was alright.

Otherwise, the general rule is to buy things that you want anyway; if you simply buy something because it says "reduced", then you may well be fooling yourself.
  • I have to agree after visiting the sales yesterday - thought the offers were very poor and the merchandise did not appear to be flying off the shelves!
  • I went to a local outlet village yesterday, mainly because I needed a birthday present for my daughters friend, I expected it to be heaving and be queueing to park but it was dead, like a ghost town really, I didn't find any bargains at all (although did get the present I was after), I'm beginning to wonder if all the hype in the media about retailers having a hard time is just one big joke, they certainly don't seem to be having a hard time near me

I think we've all just been so spoilt by the pre-Christmas sales that we are inevitably disappointed. I bought nothing (must be a first!) My son did well - shoes in Burtons for £7 reduced from £25 & £35 (but they were there before Christmas) & a jacket in River Island reduced to less than half price. But the things he really wanted in RI are not reduced.......

Some items I bought a couple of weeks ago in Gap and Fat Face were reduced by half price and luckily was able to buy again in the right sizes, so the others will go back. But generally, bedlinen/towels and the like seem to have the best reductions.

I went into M & S yesterday and you could have done just as well prior to the sale if you were buying Autograph as most of it was 20% off prior to the 20% off day plus going through Quidco gives you an additional 5% so a coat I was after worked out at 45% off and its not even been reduced in the sale, it is still £99 the same worked for a sat nav from M & S after the deductions worked out at £49 UK & Europe so all in all I did well pre sale.

Keeping an eye on discount codes and using sites like Quidco can give you very good prices for things you actually need/want throughout the year.
