If you lose your job I think your food bill will be the least of your worries.

There speaks someone who has yet to experience what it is like to be three days away from not being able to buy anything to eat at all, and who has no dependants. You are assuming that there will always be food available, eg in fast-food outlets. I can remember days in past recessions when there would be NO bread, NO loo roll, NO milk to be bought anywhere.

Political commentators have been saying for a while that this country is five meals away from anarchy. Not five hot baths. Not five stiff whiskies. Not even five days of an extended power cut.

Don't eat the dogs - apologies to my vegetarian son... but it's not for any ethical reasons - I think there's something poisonous in their livers - it did for some artic explorers who took to eating the huskies when all else gave out. Starvation didn't get them, it was the toxins saw them off.

Thank you, I shall keep this advice in mind. As a veggie myself, it would have to be quite bad before I ate my dogs! If I do have to resort to eating them then I shall make a pate from the livers and offer it to my neighbours, who according to GDB2222, will be trying to climb over my fence to eat me for my water content! That should sort that little problem out.

In preparation for the apocalypse you invest in a seriously large and tough dog. You then run out of dog food. How long can you stay awake?

edit: sorry if I'm not taking this seriously, but I am enjoying it.

You need to stockpile 2 litres of water per day per member of the family. So, how many days do you want to last out for, bearing in mind that you may get eaten by your neighbours just for your water content?
That's about 1000 bottles for us from Lidl...don't think they have that amount in stock. This is why people die I guess....you never get around to buying your 1000 bottles of water as they don't fit in the car and it would bust the months food budget.....so armaggedon comes..and you get caught out.

Aren't we all supposed to head for the Scottish highlands? Hope my Tom Tom keeps working. Whatever happens it can't be as bad as changing all that old Cobol code to handle 4 digit years, that was real suffering.

I believe that in times of panic you should look where the majority are heading and then run as fast as possible in the opposite direction.

So I guess I'm going to the Isle of Wight!

Buy some water purifying tablets and drink your own pee and catch rainwater. Lots of rainwater in the UK.

Long enough to take it to Battersea Dogs Home. Unfortunately, I gather that animal rescues all over the country are already seeing this.

Nooooo, what will get you through the recession is cunning and ingenuity, and not a large dog.

Can I just stockpile the comfort food and forego the rest?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I read somewhere - and have never forgotten - how to collect condensation overnight (for drinking water). It involves a sheet of plastic, a hole in the ground, a stone and something for the condensation to drip into. Apparently, this works even in the desert.

Buy a seagoing boat and live on it. Stock up. First sign of trouble, cast off.
P.S. Don't head for the coast of Africa.
