I just posted this on the recession thread...and worked out it should be here,,,I have just drunk my supply of wine so am all over the board tonight.

I am worrying now...my old dad stored loads of tins in our cellar during the 70's. He was asking me about my ''stores'' recently. I don't have any 'stores'...well a bag of chick peas and brown rice and processed cereal...that's it really.
He's old now, so I ignored him....that sounds terrible but sometimes old people can go on and on and you are never sure what are the gems in what they are saying and what is the paranoid, old person information that is no longer relevant to our time.

He said we had tins in case of nuclear war...I never knew when I was a kid that that was the reason for tins in the cellar...and bottled fruit in kilner jars that my mother made.

He told me Xmas day he has stocked up the cellar again......

I am thin so would starve to death really quickly...OH has a bit of a belly to work his way through.

I am getting worried now....but it would only work if you had enough to keep you going until your own crops were ready to harvest...that would take a year? How much food would keep you fed for 1 year? And you can't live on packets and tins and white flour pasta...you'd get scurvy and die of that instead.

Why would someone being made redundant result in a food shortage? Are the supermarkets only allowing employed people to shop?

Because even battery chickens are imported from China. We have virtually no arable land left in the UK (thanks to the housing shortage scam) and most of our farmers went out of business more than five years ago thanks to the likes of Asda forcing them to sell wares at cost price, despite over-charging the consumer with sickening margins.

If we can't import food, we are fooked.

BTW bought a breadmaker last month as cost of bread has doubled over the past few years. SCrummy bread and a quarter of the cost to make (not inclusive of labour and natural disasters (i.e. my incompetence))
I'll have some cheese please, bob.

I read this over there and thought perhaps you were on the wine and posting in the wrong place. (fc123s post)
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

So if society is going to break down then how much stuff do you need to keep? A weeks worth, a month, a year? Do you think it will fail for good and we will go back to an episode of the Survivors, while zombie chavs roam the streets? Or do you think a month will see you through the riots, armageddon, etc. and then Tesco will be open again?

Come on guys - I'm a bear but I'm not barking.

As well as the food, don't forget your first aid kit. Boots will be on fire too!

    # Two pairs of Latex, or other sterile gloves (if you are allergic to Latex).
    # Sterile dressings to stop bleeding.
    # Cleansing agent/soap and antibiotic towelettes to disinfect.
    # Antibiotic ointment to prevent infection.
    # Burn ointment to prevent infection.
    # Adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes.
    # Eye wash solution to flush the eyes or as general decontaminant.
    # Thermometer

So what should we stockpile? I've had a 'sorte' upstairs in the boxroom for ages.
    There's tins of;
    beans
    tomatoes
    spaghetti
Dog food (have you seen the price of that lately  )

I've got some bags of flour and a couple of bags of pasta, but haven't a clue what else I should have there?

    Biscuits maybe? :o

Well presumably the hospital will also go - all those free drugs - so you need a saw and a bottle of whisky - for those more serious medical emergencies. Probably a bucket as well.
