    I live very near to a Curry's and PC World. We went for a walk this afternoon and the car parks were absolutely heaving. so it doesn't look as though many are heeding your warnings! The Curry's store have also recently had a major refit and the PC World seems to have dropped a lot of it's gaming (XBox/ Wii ) lines and these are now in Curry's. I did suggest to a member of staff that they must be trying to kill off PC World, but he said not (didn't believe him!!)

    at the moment the situation for the DSG group (pcworld, currys, dixons) looks dire.

    i have a friend who works as a manager at currys and he was telling me a couple of home truths as to what is happening

    he said that since the DSG share price fell throught the floor, all they are concerened about is the bottom line, profits and ultimately survival.

    he was telling me that any purchase would be welcome, but not to expect any kind of after sales.

    and that over xmas they will be pressurising customers to take out extended warranties (at rip off prices which M&S / John Lewis throw in for FREE) to make there christmas bonuses.

    there xmas prices will be as competitive as others, but on the extended warranties they will 'rip peoples arms and legs off' (his words!), so folk who think they are getting a decent price on there telly will end up forking upwards of £400 to get a 5yr extended on a LCD (money in the bag for DSG as he put it!)

    also with regards to after sales, the DSG group of companies will try not to give you a refund no matter what.

    if anyone has a complaint or a fault post xmas on there products, this is what the currys manager told me will be the course of action:

    1) contact the manufaturer eg: sony / acer etc (nothing to do with us attitude)
    2) if you argue enough, manager involvement you will get a replacement
    3) if you argue stronger still and after numerous management escalations refund in the form of DSG vouchers

    what he said was once the money is taken then DSG will not refund you no matter what!

    YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!

    MMMMmmm this is standard in the electronics retail sector.

    The oppersite seems to have happened near me. They refitted PC World and it now has more gaming stuff and the nearby currys has practically none at all now.

    It's is inevitable that some of the big high street names will fail next year, so do yourselves a favour and follow these tips.

    1) If the item is over £100 pay by Credit Card (NOT Cheque/Charge/Store or Debit Cards)
    2) If you have to put a deposit down, make sure it is at least £100 and pay by Credit Card.
    3) If the offers sound too good to be true or you are unsure go elsewhere - John Lewis / Marks & Spencer.
    4) If you have to buy something less than £100 from a weak company, do so by a VISA Debit Card, as it is possible to do a CHARGE-BACK sometimes!
    5) Be careful if you take out shop finance agreements, and read who is liable if the company fails!
    6) If you get a refund in store vouchers spend them quick! They are worthless if the store fails.

    I've never liked Currys / PC World, full of staff who try to sell you products that they know nothing about, but always oversell the warranty. I just go there to pricematch then trot back to John Lewis.

    Like any electrical retailer at the moment, they are suffering, and very badly, but in all honestly the store management won't know about it going bust, the only people who will is that select group at head office, and they ain't going to tell anyone else.

    The signs are there, a sudden loss & stock piled high, but I don't know how thier accounts are really fairing, but if they have a good balance sheet it will see them through. But some of the stores are full of bad and incompetent management which need clearing out, as the post before does show. One rule of management is never slate your company, it will bite you in the a*s
    These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

    I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

    Yes - some retailers who have not been good at what they have done, or are in niche markets have gone under. There is nothing to say that DSG will not go under, but equally there is nothing to say that M&S, Topshop, BHS, or Harrods will not have the same problem.

    As it stands, DSG are unlikely to be problematic. I have heard nothing from the retail world suggesting that their decline is imminent, and I am probably likely to hear of early rumblings.

    I would not worry at all. If anyone has any concerns, buy it on your credit card for >£100 and claim it back from the credit card company.

    If I thought that posting something like this would direct consumers to my employers website, I would post something like this. Wouldn't be surprised if the origins of this thread came from somebody working for an online electrical retailer, trying to scaremonger.

    Large electronics are one of the things I wouldn't usually buy from an online retailer. Small things, yes, but at least with a large electronics store you can walk in and kick up a stink if things go really badly wrong. As opposed to having to mess about waiting for a courier to pick up the item.
  • DSG do have things to work with if things become really bad. They own dixions currys and pc world. I'm sure they would try and save as much as they can, so it could mean nothing, or maybe just a merging or removing of one or more of the current 3.

    All stores are under threat from the Internet and supermarket chains. People buying electrical, cd's dvd's etc etc from supermarket chains are ultimately pushing other retailers out of the way. Its the convenience factor. These days you can pop to tesco, or asda maybe some sainsburys. Pick up a weekly grocery shop, plus stationary, saucepans, dvd's, clothes, pc's tv's, books....you name it you can mostly get it. Its this that is causing the greatest problem imo, plus with people having less money in their pocket to spend there isn't room for all traders. However I don't think DSG are likely to completely crumble at the moment.
