  • The two points you mention:

    - Selling/pushing over-inflated warranties
    and
    - Stingent and inconsistent return policies (usually relating to opened products).

...these have been a feature of these electrical companies for a long time - it's nothing new. If the manager thinks it is a new approach - then he must be new to the job!

Stores cannot refuse returns 'no matter what'. The stores have a 14/28 return policy on unopened goods (although this is not a statutory right, it is in their T&Cs). A customer also has statutory rights - e.g. if a good is faulty then the store must sort this out.

I wouldn't mind seeing the back of these stores as their customer service is generally dreadful, but it doesn't put me off buying something if the price is right.

If anyone is worried, buy your goods on credit card.

I've heard the same thing about DSG from insiders and would avoid them like the plague too. I can't see them being around for much longer.

    HA!!

Many have tried, All have failed.

They cant NOT give you your money back if the product is fit for return in guarantee.

    Try Me.

They can if they've gone out of business.

  • But if everyone decides to buy else where due to scare stories, they certainly will go out of business if they have no customers.

Most electricals have manufacturer warranties, so whats the problem? An idem is covered by the manufacturer that made it. Only issue would be with goods of the stores own brand.
  • dont believe what the shop manager says, www.consumerdirect.gov.uk will give advice on your legal rights for a refund

If you bought an expensive tv and it broke within 6 months, you'd take to back to the retailer as your contact is with them. Denise is only trying to offer advice. DSG are on very shakey ground. If you are going to buy high priced electricals, you're better going to John Lewis for example and getting a price match.

Mr Cow, my comment is in reply to what DENISE originally posted towards the lower end. She has not mentioned anything about DSG going bust. I quote -

"if anyone has a complaint or a fault post xmas on there products, this is what the currys manager told me will be the course of action:

    1) contact the manufaturer eg: sony / acer etc (nothing to do with us attitude)
    2) if you argue enough, manager involvement you will get a replacement
    3) if you argue stronger still and after numerous management escalations refund in the form of DSG vouchers

what he said was once the money is taken then DSG will not refund you no matter what!"

    ....

However, you are absolutely right, if a company goes bust. There are ways of getting your money back. Chances are, sometimes, bleak.

    IN REGARDS TO MANUFACTURER'S GUARANTEE/WARRANTY

A guarantee and warranty are two different services. Please run a search to differentiate.

Now, with most electricals, only one year is covered by the manufacturer. The rest are covered by the company you bought from. (always read terms and conditions before you buy online, always ask instore, its lengthy, its a pain, but if you dont know you're screwed lol) If a need arises where you wish to return your product within one year, you may do so under the manufacturer's guarantee. (which the shop may handle) After that, the guarantee is the responsibility of the company that sold you the product. The terms are pretty much the same, you get a refund or product replaced etc, with the exception that, if that company goes bust, then so does your guarantee. Then you've got problems.

More information and legal advice can be found if you run a search on some statements.

    Hope that helps!!

  • regarding dsg going bust the pc world and curry's in stevenage have both just had refurbishments done and if they were on the point of going bust they would not have done that work.

i dont think bust is the right word to use. a few stores might close, a few lines dropped/discontinued, that sorta thing. it might just be a good sign, the refurb, that the ones in your area will remain lol!
