DSG Group status / * * Warning for those purchasing from DSG (Currys/Dixons?PCWorld)

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, couldn't find anywhere better.

How likely is it that the DSG Group will go into administration quite soon? On other forums like HUKD this is being suggested?

short to medium term unlikely, they made a lose in the last 6mths but that was mainly due to the curry's side of the business. PC World side of the business is holding up even thought they over estimated the laptop market resulting them selling over supply stock low than they would of liked.

They're rid it out if they make changes to account for the changes in the consumer

If you'd worried about buying anything then pay by credit card on anything over £100 (making sure you can afford it)
  • Just seen a post on HUKD (http://hotukdeals.com/item/303773/showpost.php?p=3863460&postcount=171), any truth in this?

They've gone to the press saying that web traffic yesterday was up 40% compared to last year. I don't know if that means they're doing OK or whether they deliberately tried to turn attention away from their potential trading difficulties.
  • Very Likely,

They have fallen out with some big manufacturer's due to an issue of using certain products as loss leaders and their competitors complaining to the manufacturers about it.

Also there is a problem with their underwriters
  • at the moment the situation for the DSG group (pcworld, currys, dixons) looks dire.

i have a friend who works as a manager at currys and he was telling me a couple of home truths as to what is happening

first of all he said whatever you do dont buy from them! he said try your utmost to get other stores to pricematch them and then buy from them.

he said that since the DSG share price fell throught the floor, all they are concerened about is the bottom line, profits and ultimately survival.

he was telling me that any purchase would be welcome, but not to expect any kind of after sales.

and that over xmas they will be pressurising customers to take out extended warranties (at rip off prices which M&S / John Lewis throw in for FREE) to make there christmas bonuses.

there xmas prices will be as competitive as others, but on the extended warranties they will 'rip peoples arms and legs off' (his words!), so folk who think they are getting a decent price on there telly will end up forking upwards of £400 to get a 5yr extended on a LCD (money in the bag for DSG as he put it!)

also with regards to after sales, the DSG group of companies will try not to give you a refund no matter what.

if anyone has a complaint or a fault post xmas on there products, this is what the currys manager told me will be the course of action:

    1) contact the manufaturer eg: sony / acer etc (nothing to do with us attitude)
    2) if you argue enough, manager involvement you will get a replacement
    3) if you argue stronger still and after numerous management escalations refund in the form of DSG vouchers

what he said was once the money is taken then DSG will not refund you no matter what!

    YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!

That post really reads to me like you're trying to scare people when there's no need to.

Whether they will give you a refund or not depends on a number of factors, some which are out of the store manager's control.

DSG have lost a ton of money (largely I expect due to a slump in warranty sales and 'monster' type leads which have no benefit) but I wouldn't be put off buying from them.

In fact, this is the way most major electronics retailers work. Unlike a supermarket, where profit is made on just the products, retailers like this tend to make less cash on the items themselves. The real money is made on things like installation services, wall brackets, extended warrantys, accessories and so forth. Which the employees are generally under a lot of pressure to sell.

One thing that is worth mentioning is that you shouldn't usually buy cables from a major store, or even a supermarket. Even supermarkets tend to sell things like USB cables for a fiver. You can get one from Poundland for a quid! And as for HDMI cables, they tend to sell for around a tenner, yet you can get them from Home Bargains for £2.99. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, a trip to your local bargain store can save you a tenner or so.
