JL will not pricematch an online retailer. You will have to find an actual store that has it on display. I got JL Liverpool to pricematch sound and vision in Bolton and then have it delivered to Glasgow.I normally wouldn't touch Dixons et all with a ten foot barge pole, but they are pretty competitive for large-ish plasma tv's... I've had my eye on a 42" Panasonic there for a while, and have been waiting for the next decent % discount code to come along, but this thread has got me slightly nervous... I may have to attempt a John Lewis price match, it would be a new experience at least
In terms of customer service JL is head and shoulders above any of the DSG group.0 -
I thought Pye or at least it was at one time owned by Philips
Yes wilki confirms this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pye
Pye Ltd. was an electronics company founded in Cambridge, England and is currently wholly owned by Philips.
Ferguson was taken over by Thomson a French companyYes Lasky's and Curry's are still in existance, but not as the independent companies they were. Lasky is now part of COMET and Currys is Dixons now.
It's the same with PYE, MURPHY, FERGUSON, BUSH all were good British companies, sadly now all part of Alba plc.0 -
You can argue it's the consumer's fault and of course it is, if you are strictly literal about it.
That said, neither Comet nor Currys have, in my opinion, done much for the consumer in the long run. Their cheapness was often more apparent than real and their service standards were appalling.
People may have thought they were getting a better price (the gruesome twosome certainly encouraged them to think that) but whether it was true or not, they paid in terms of rotten service , 'extended warranty' scams and restricted choice.
I, for one, wont mourn their passing in the least.
Dont normally get involved in threads like this but here goes.........
Currys is loosing money PC world like other orams of the business is holding on nicely . There are around 40 different businesed owned by DSGI so they are set to wether the storm nicely. They recognised a problem that curry's and PCW were becoming to much alike and they are now trying to make them different again.
What DSGI has done for consumers is employed a huge number of them, Not just the spotty pale 18yo that every store has but people from every age group due to targetted recruitment. each medeum sized store employes around 30 people the little shop on the high street employes maybe 3.
I think we are very silly if we dont think that each of these has thier place in the market. Can i also just say that i do not work for any bit of the business. I am a small business owner :-)
Good luck all
Vicky
The glass is always half full, no exceptions !!:D0 -
I don’t think we should speculate to much, it does the business and consumer confidence no good to start bad mouthing them on a public forum. Yes people have had a bad experience but what about all the good ones, what about all the people they employ. I would be horrified if I was an employee and I read this post.
At the end of the day we have no idea what goes on inside that business, it is not easy to turn around such a huge beast as the DSG group.
Lets see what happens and cross our fingers that they can rescue it.0 -

And how many small businesses do you suppose Currys and Comet have displaced in the process? How many high streets have been reduced to haunted valleys populated by charity shops and estate agents as consumers deserted them for retail parks? How many consumers have been scalped by 'extended warranty' scams? How many have received rotten product advice and questionable service?
My issue is with those expressing sympathy with the whitegoods sheds suffering at the hands of Internet retailers. It's exactly the same evolutionary process that put thousands of small shopkeepers out of business and from which Dixons and Comet benfited from so handsomely.0 -

Fair enough but I guess it depends on what side of the fence you sit on. The rules are the same for everyone, we can all expand we can all start a webiste etc etc
You can say the same about this site really, not everything should be free or discounted.0 -
It's really not about whether things should be free or discounted, it's about living and dying by the sword. Currys and Comet played pretty rough, in my estimation, and are now getting the same treatment they dished out, as Internet sales take over.
I don't have a problem with that - and I find it hard to understand why anyone who doesn't have a vested interest in them would. In short - I don't see them as deserving of consumers' sympathy.0 -

regarding dsg going bust the pc world and curry's in stevenage have both just had refurbishments done and if they were on the point of going bust they would not have done that work.
I wont say this happens All the time but certainly a lot of companies heading up the swannie, do tend to have a lot of refubs done
