I don’t think we should speculate to much, it does the business and consumer confidence no good to start bad mouthing them on a public forum. Yes people have had a bad experience but what about all the good ones, what about all the people they employ. I would be horrified if I was an employee and I read this post.

At the end of the day we have no idea what goes on inside that business, it is not easy to turn around such a huge beast as the DSG group.

Lets see what happens and cross our fingers that they can rescue it.

Fingers crossed indeed for all the people they employ.

A family member is a manager at currys and he is not holding his breath. Apparently currys made a 22 million loss and pc world made an 11 milion profit. if anyone goes, you can see who its going to be. The family member also mentioned that Dixons has been on shady ground for a long time and heared on the grapevine that they are earmarked for closure, so perhaps currys may do better then, without dixons being in the mix to pull some profit.
  • Fingers crossed for him, I hope he is ok.

At the end of the day we have no idea what a 22 million loss means in real terms, it is reported as a 22 million loss but that could have been lost (or spent) on a number of things.

A previous company I worked for SPENT 10 million on stacking people as they where rubbish (that’s how much it costs), it was reported in the press that the company was heading down the pan as we LOST 10 million against the previous year, this wasn’t the case at all.

Rebranding, redundancies, retiremnt, pensions, sacking staff, refurbishments of stores, invest in new stores, invest in new technologies and backend systems, expansion into new territories all cost money, for any company. In the case of a huge company such as DSG they must cost millions, tens of millions. You have to read between the lines what is reported, I am sure the people in charge will not want to see it sink and they will be doing the best they can.

I have no doubt they are felling the pinch from the recent downturn, the same as my local butcher will be but I bet you all buy your meat from Tesco......

My point is we have no idea what is going on behind closed doors, and I am sure even less idea how to run a huge national company. Lets hope they don’t go under for the sake of all the staff, not to mention the huge contribution they make to the economy.
  • I am employed by DSGI and everything your talking about is speculation we don't get xmas bonus's we get a bonus every month if targets are hit and that is not anymore at xmas and it has been like that for nearly 2 years most companys like comet argos staples use warranties to make profits but when i did my training i was taught to give first class customer service no matter what and i try my best to resovle any customer issues without delay i think every company is struggling at the moment.

    <snip>

Not in my case, I don't. I buy my meat direct from two suppliers - a smallholding family that rears its own pigs and a local butcher who can source all his meat to local farms.

"My point is we have no idea what is going on behind closed doors, and I am sure even less idea how to run a huge national company. Lets hope they don’t go under for the sake of all the staff, not to mention the huge contribution they make to the economy.[/quote]

I don't bear any ill will to (most) DSG or Comet staff (I'd make an exception for the
whiz-kids who dreamed-up some of their sharp practises), but I'm not sure what you mean by their contribution to the economy. Do you think that no one will buy whitegoods if they close?

What about the jobs created by the people who replace them, not least in distribution and logistics?

Not many tears were shed for the small, local electrical businesses put out of work as DSG, Comet et al grew at their expense.
  • I have no sympathy for currys I generally buy all my white goods online now but when we moved in March needed a new fridge freezer, decided to go to Currys to see what they had, amazing display! great! found the perfect one and asked about delivery, they had no stock (surprise surprise) and it would be 3 weeks before they could get hold of one for me, 3 weeks without a fridge?????, I asked if I could have the display one, computer says no, I then asked if they would find out if there was stock at any other store, they reluctantly had a look for me on their computer and told me the store in Leeds have one, great! I'll have that one then please, computer says no, I have to go to Leeds myself to order it. !!!!!!???? Leeds is 60 miles away, why can't they just process my order and have it delivered to me from there? can't do that as they are a completely separate shop,

totally unhelpful! so I came home bought online for £100 cheaper and had it delivered within 3 days

and then they wonder why people are giving up these stores for internet purchases!!

There are big problems with dsgi at the moment but only the board will really know how serious it is. The best advise as already given is pay with credit card and don't buy extended warrenties in the current economic climate.

Curry's to go next? Now I'm no economist, but, Curry's offering 12 months before having to pay. Where is the cash flow? Very little from traditional sources (banks) and now, non from the customer. 2 or 3 year ago a successful furniture company (can't remember name) failed because their creditors anted some payment but it was all tied up in buy now pay later schemes.

Bye bye Curry's? Are PCWorld doing the same thing?
