you all forgetting the price comparisons websites like http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/
http://www.dealtime.co.uk/
http://www.kelkoo.co.uk/
put in model no. of what you want see the cheapest price pay with the credit card goods insured if over £100 by cc company
currys are well over priced, comet not much better, argos are not always that cheap but they do try.
really needs them all to be price matching and included all retail including online! johnlewis pricematch would not pricematch a bosch dishwasher at crampton & Moore in Sheffield a department store no less they where £50 cheaper than JL the only way the JL would have pricematched if i lived in sheffield, ha right i live near portsmouth. all i have ever wanted is the best price I don't care where it comes from and it is really about time the bigger companys worked that out they actually would'nt lose out that much. how many people actually bother to ask for a price match its not as if they have to lower there price nationwide is it but prob find they would shift alot more units and repeat business would prob go up and recoup costs there afterwards its not surprising so many companies will go down the loo.

I normally wouldn't touch Dixons et all with a ten foot barge pole, but they are pretty competitive for large-ish plasma tv's... I've had my eye on a 42" Panasonic there for a while, and have been waiting for the next decent % discount code to come along, but this thread has got me slightly nervous... I may have to attempt a John Lewis price match, it would be a new experience at least :think:0

DSG just got it all wrong!
think about it for years they and comet were the only main players in the market, profit margins were good, customer base was strong (if you didnt like them, tough, you still went back to them as they were the only ones for miles who did the branded electricals and had a variety of them).
this was there time to capitalise, build a customer relationship, a decent rapport with there customers. but instead they just treated there customers as your motorway service station would (that is one off, get this one sale in the bag and thts that!)
That is so true
We were talking about this at work the other day. DSG have treated their customers like dirt for years, and got away with it because with Comet they had a virtual monopoly on electrical goods.
Now Tesco sell everything and the net is thriving.. people have finally realised that they don't need Currys anymore. The end can't come too soon. Good riddance!0 -

Rather harsh, no consideration for all those jobs, not only the direct jobs, but those of suppliers etc that will also go.0 -

Yes Lasky's and Curry's are still in existance, but not as the independent companies they were. Lasky is now part of COMET and Currys is Dixons now.
It's the same with PYE, MURPHY, FERGUSON, BUSH all were good British companies, sadly now all part of Alba plc.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
There's a touch of poetic justice about the decline of Currys and Comet. They grew to take over the UK whitegoods market by destoyng a lot of little, local shops, many of whom did offer good service, but couldn't compete on price.
As for comparisons between the two, I've never found Comet any better than Currys - often worse, in fact. On a couple of occasions I've had to threaten to 'go legal;' with branches of Comet, when they have point blank lied about their obligations under the Sale of Goods act.
As a consequence I will no longer use them as anything other than a free showroom.0 -

Actually no Currys etc were not to blame, WE are to blame by buying on the basis of price as opposed to service, which is why we have clone town high streets. Simple economics, little shop buys two cookers from manufacturer, and can sell them in a quarter. Currys can buy 50 and sell them in a month. As the manufacturer who would you rather deal with? the small guy who might sell 8 cookers in a year or Currys who will buy 600 in a year? So the manufacturer gives Currys best price and little guy a little of the list.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -

You can argue it's the consumer's fault and of course it is, if you are strictly literal about it.
That said, neither Comet nor Currys have, in my opinion, done much for the consumer in the long run. Their cheapness was often more apparent than real and their service standards were appalling.
People may have thought they were getting a better price (the gruesome twosome certainly encouraged them to think that) but whether it was true or not, they paid in terms of rotten service , 'extended warranty' scams and restricted choice.
I, for one, wont mourn their passing in the least.0
