Hellooooo! I realised just now I didn't post on here on Friday - last week I lost 4 lb!

I've got the worst PMT muchies today, but I have been stubborn and ate a load of cherries and 2 muler lights instead! And I've also even cut out my sugar in my tea, and gone back to black coffee with sweetners.

I was good like this for about 6 years last week, then I got bored and crumbled, I MUST make sure I stick at it this time. I want to be in a size 10 bikini by the time I go Turkey in July!

While I'm rabbiting on about my motivation, what is yours?

Mazza, well done on the loss! Great result. I'm dreading my PMT munchies in a week or so. I tend to crave carbs, which I'm trying to avoid, but I'm hoping that by reducing my carb intake this month, it might be better? Ever the optomist, eh?

As for the motivation... similar to your's really. I've been overweight most of my life, sometimes by just a few pounds, a lot of the time by several stones. I'm short with a small frame, and just shouldn't be carrying this weight around. I have reached that time of life where I need to do something about it before my metabolism slows down significantly, and before I do my joints untold damage (I already think it's affected my knees). There is a history of arthritis/hip replacements in my family, so I would like to avoid that as much as possible too.

I have also regained a lot of weight from a couple of years ago, when I lost weight. I felt fab, and treated myself to lots of new clothes. All of which I cannot now wear. At night, as I lie in bed in those quiet few minutes before I fall asleep, I imagine wearing those clothes again. I regret having gone back to my bad eating habits, and generally overeating, so Chop, I can relate to your story very much.

Thinking about the issue of portion control, it has been a problem for me to know what is a correct portion. I grew up in a family where we were given a large plated meal, and I had started to do the same with my own children. I bought smaller plates for them, but I was still putting too much on my plate! Now, as I am so determined to make a change for the rest of my life, I need to educate myself as to what a normal portion looks like. I invested in a 'flat bed' set of digital scales. I put my dinner plate on that, set it to zero, and add my food, so I know when I've got 100g of chicken, 100g of potato, etc. I have to say 100g of chicken looked a lot less than I'd imagined!! It's definitely encouraging me to plonk more cabbage on my plate!:D

I feel bloated when I have wheat products, and when I cut down on pasta and bread I feel so much better. My friend is the same, so that could be a consideration, although I'm sure you already have.

Debaz that surely has to be loss of the week! Brilliant result.:T

No HHE/HHA for me today. I had a workman in the house half the day, so was a bit too self conscious to get the Wii fit out. I've got another coming tomorrow, but I hope he won't stay as long. I can't go out for a walk or anything when they're there.
One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home

:T Well done mazza and debaz.

I've had one of those nice weight loss experiences when you put on an item of clothing that you haven't worn in a while and found that it's looser than you remembered. Would be nice if people started noticing my weight loss but then again I'm working with people I haven't seen in a while and the clothes I have to wear for work would, and do, have the tendancy to make the most supermodelesque look some what normal! Great leveller.

My motivation - I've put on 3 ish stone in five years and I need to be fitter in my job. I'd also like to not be the "big one" in all my photos with friends and siblings, although I was never unhappy with my weight or sizde there was always bits of me that I liked. This time around I intend to maintain my final weight/size better - replacing clothes is expensive!
  • My motivation is to feel good about myself: I dropped from an 18-20 to a size 14 from May 07 -to Jan 08 and am quite happy with that - no desire to be super slim: I want quality of life and not to push so that I miserable. I am realistic enough to know with my limied ability to exercise and my pleasure in food, a size 14 is as low as I'm going. IT's also better for my general health.
I've now gone 10lbs over my limit so am tackling that before I slide down a slippery slope. First weigh in at sw tomorrow. Not done brilliantly as had a lurgy, I also take drugs that can make me very hungry no long after a meal.

Chop - no need to apologise, all very interesting. I agree that is better not to get obsessive and it sounds like you've got it very nearly cracked. It seems to be a question of what works for you without actually going hungry. If you don't bloat with a reduced portion, that does sound the answer. And in time you can up the portion perhaps a little and see when the bloating returns. I think exercise wil tone you and give you better shape in your clothes and might not necessarily show on the scales but you will look like you ahve lost weight.

3 days of no running water in the kitchen are at an end, so back to normal stair use tomorrow. But I have 3 days of washing up to do:eek: , including lodger's (who's done a brilliant job putting in sink and won't take any money) so I'd count that as an HHA:)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

However I am not going to beat myself up about it.
Diet going well, I have been active for most of the day and I am going swimming tomorrow for some lengths.I will be in pool around 7pm if anyone wants to join me for a wet HHE.
Off to bed now as knackered#;)

  • Hi everyone,

Happy New Year! I am so pleased to find this thread, am jumping the gun a bit as have not read through the whole lot yet but am desperate to get started with losing weight. Apologies if the following is a bit jumbled but I'm throwing everyone on e-mail and will try to sort it out later.

Here's where I am: I'm 5ft 8in, about 89kg and eat pretty healthily but have 2 major problems: when I'm home alone in the evenings I snack on allsorts like cheese, savoury snacks like bombay mix and rice crackers as well as dark chocolate. The other problem is I like wine. I do like exercise but I have a real barrier walking 5 mins down the road to the gym!! I know all the stuff I should do but I just can't sort it in my head. Sometimes I like a ciggy with my wine, that's one thing I want to kick as I spent 2 solid weeks at Christmas without a single one, so it's definitely possible, I think I just do it out of boredom, habit and loneliness.

If I do well and am disciplined for a week, the following week I crash and burn. I really like the Food Doctor recipes, I love cooking, I live on my own but I should really have a family of four to cook for as it's quite hard cooking any recipes in a cookbook for just one and my thrift stops me from throwing leftovers away, so I eat them which means my portions are too big. When I do want to bake something I take it into the office to stop myself from eating it all myself. I want to go for a run at lunchtime but I often get into work about 15 mins late, so I feel guilty about taking 1 1/2 hrs to go for a run, so I sit at my desk - physical presence still feels like it's more important than actual output. I need to break that spell in my head! Does anyone else have that particular problem?

I had a medical before Christmas and broached the subject of wanting some help with losing weight and was told that it wasn't rocket science, that I should only consume as many calories as I was going to burn. I was really upset afterwards. Why is it that the gods in white coats mill around and ram it down your throat that they'll wean people off nicotine and other drugs but when you ask for help with losing weight you're treated like some kind of imbecile? I didn't plan to put on weight, stuff just happened and food was a great comfort to me. Ironically, I actually get more satisfaction out of cooking for others than eating it, I do it because it's there and I can't see it go to waste.

To finish off on a good note, here is a really nice recipe for some easy savoury biscuits which are good to stave off cravings and avoid eating more fatty savoury snacks:

Below is the recipe as promised:

    Sesame biscuits

    Ingredients
    50g (20z) unsalted butter
    100g (3 1/2 oz) whoemlemeal flour
    25g (1oz) fine oatmeal
    25g 1oz) sesame seeds
    25g 1oz) sunflower seeds
2-3 tablespoons soya or rice milk (I've used skimmed and semi-skimmed milk and they turned out ok)

    Method
    1. Set the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5 and line a baking tray with baking parchment.

    2. Rub the butter into the flour and oatmeal and stir in the seeds. Then use the milk to bind the mixture. Use 2 tablespoons to start with, adding more milk as necessary until the mixture forms a moist ball.

    3. Place on a floured board and roll out to about 0.3cm (1/8 in) thick. (if you roll the mixture out too thinly it will be impossible to cut into shapes).

    4. Use a fluted cutter to make 5-6cm (2-2 1/4 in) rounds and place on the prepared tray. Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

Enjoy on their own, with goat cheese or a nice Jarlsberg or cheddar!

Thanks for listening, my apologies if I have confused the issue.

    Hi everyone,

Well today has been a mixture of good and bad! I didnt get to bed till 2am and up at 7.30 so have been tired all day. Did an hour and a half dog walking in the rain and hours of uni work. We have someone in doing some decorating for us (a friend) so I made sausage sandwiches for lunch and while the men had 4 big sausages each I had one and shared it with the dog! Had got stuff out for dinner but found that I had been doing constant physical work moving stuff and stripping wallpaper from 4 till 8 so ended up ordering pizza and carrying on working till 10.30! So I had a bad dinner but have done so much work today I cant beat myself up. So now I have to go to bed and get up at 7.15 to go and pick up the guy who is doing work here again tomorrow.

Oh and I weighed myself on Wednesday last week so will do the same this week and will post my loss then. So please can I go on the chart this week BB?
