  • only sure way to get free food is proletarian shopping / a five finger discount(or go skip diving) ;)

  • Staff at supermarkets are nice and friendly but remeber it is a two way system since the unions have decided that staff cannot be treated badly or spoken to out of term or abused.
Staff are trained to be friendly, they do what they can, but remember that they have homes to go to aswell, and also have less time off over this so called festive period.

I nipped into my local Asda. Thought I would get a loaf of bread and make my own stuffing for the Turkey. To my amazement, they didn't have any bread left and that was at about 2.30pm. But they were selling packs of christmas cards for 10 and 20p. Cashew, mixed nut packs worth £4 and £2.50 for 5p each. Small Thai Green fish cakes with sauce worth £4 for 2 packs for 20p. So there were bargains to buy. I forgot to buy Cranberry Sauce, they sold out the ordinary so had to buy the Luxury and pay over the odds for it. But that's what you get for forgetting. Oh yes there was also fresh packs of Basil for 1p. Sprouts, bagged and on the stem for 10p.

I worked in M & S and no they did not do that. What they DID do was sell a lot of perishables off dirt cheap to staff.

They should GIVE it to staff, FGS!!!1

I did a last minute bit of shopping this morning, nothing reduced in Marks or few bits in Sainsburys, but not much.

In Tesco about 30 minutes before closing they were throwing all of the bread into huge sacks to be binned.

Why did they not give it to charity, staff, customers... anyone. To just throw it away like that is shameful:mad:

MRSE I agree.. I went into my local tescos late afternoon just to see what they had and they had nothing so either they werent reducing or it had all gone. The store was still in full flow tho packed and all tills heaving..and FYI having worked for Marks I can say that I don't think they will ever reduce. I dunno why their policy is not to but they do apparently from what I have heard give to charities and sadly bin a lot.

I got some reductions in my local Sainsburys tonight but they weren't reduced by much.

From what I remember, the reason supermarkets don't give stuff away for free or to charities is that at one point they did do this (don't quote me on this) but someone ended up with food poisoning due to food that had been provided free and ended up suing the supermarket that it had came from. So now rather than give it away, they just bin it instead.

Know all to well that the big 4 would rather throw stuff away then give it away for free. Unfair, especially to see huge items or very posh items just get thrown away, but thats supermarkets for you, more money then sense.

I had a quick nosy in M and S was only a few things really, but nothing that I actually eat or my family so didn't get anything but got the things I had to buy milk/bread - there was still plnety left - there was nowhere giving it free though, ahhh well no problems :) I can't believe how much bread / food get's binned though after reading this, I did hope it would be passed on to shelters as well but I had heard already it is given to staff / reduced etc first then sadly just binned, more often then not.
  • I don't know about Christmas Eve as I never shop supermarkets that day (I am scarred from previous experiences - LOL!) but I do know that Lidl leave food out for people to take for free all year round.

Its usually located past the tills on the packing area and its usually bread but on occasions I have picked up a pie that had to be used that day and I have seen eggs needing used within the next day or two as well.

Its usually available first thing in the morning I find.
