Well if the bailiffs are to be allowed to use more force on debtors, they shouldn't be surprised when the debtors start reciprocating. With the vast increase in debt recovery situations, I wonder how long it will be before we start hearing of a few serious injuries and/or deaths. Many people start to take it pretty personally when someone invades their home and such situations are high stress by nature.
The only case I have ever heard of (amazingly just the one) was about a guy who shot dead a council official who wanted his home demolished. That was some years ago - maybe 15 I would guess. The guy who did it was regarded as an eccentric and gun laws have tightened up since then (largely due to Dunblane). I think the time may be coming when kitchen knives are used for more than cutting food. It's just a matter of time IMO. Just in case anyone is wondering, I'm not advocating this - just making a prediction.

I remember the incident you refer to, I believe it was somewhere in Wales it occurred. I agree this is a disgusting proposal, I personally have no debt but am in agreement that, to adorn private individuals with the authority to assault debtors that are obviously distraught at the thought of losing their possessions is an obsenity. Hopefully this idea won't have the legs to make it to legislation, if it does I've no doubt that it will only be a matter of time before a debtor retaliates, sadly the individual will probably end up with a criminal record as well as being stripped of possessions and dignity at an already traumatic time in their life.
Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.

Together we can make a difference.

Thinking about this again, Im not sure it would get past our freinds in the Eurozone.

After all any suggestion of this geting onto the statute book would be an abuse of the Human rights act. Surely?

They will be far to busy making sure you don't buy the wrong sized banana or fish to do anything about things like this!

SO I guess i will add baliffs to my NONE xmas card list along with

    EA's
    Labour
    Labour supporters
    Traffic Wardens
Mobile speed operators (the NONE police ones)

I really feel this won't be passed. The alternative is passing it and dead bailiffs.
  • Its news like this that makes me so frustrated with our society, if this is even being considered then it just highlights how little the politicians and wealthy really know about normal everyday life. This whole situation has been brought about by careless lending and the press making people feel that they need the luxury items now! And with the pressure and stress that trying to keep up with the Jones' brings people lost track of their common sense.
Its good that this phase is now surely over for good but there are millions who will have to live with the consequences.
If this gets passed there will be civil uprising like we havent seen in a very long time.

Presumably under the new law the bailiffs would be sent in to beat the poo out of your parents and steal their stuff. If they've got the wrong people then it's a big mess to sort out later.

If they'd beaten up your parents epz then would that be a case of assault as they had beaten up the wrong people or would it be legal as they'd beaten up your parents in good faith?

Had they beaten the poo out my folkes the law would have been the least of their problems. I would have taken a typical free market approach and hired an compeating but superior violence provider to visit retribution on them and their families.

Odds are this will likely just result in organised crime running the repo business, yay for gordon, incompetant to the last!

    So no change there then.
  • What a terrifying idea. We were harrassed by bailiffs earlier this year for a parking fine that someone had incurred after falsely registering a car in my (partially sighted, guide dog owner) husband's name at our old address. The old place was broken into shortly after we moved out and we assume someone got hold of some post that hadn't been re-directed. It was frightening enough to have people sending red letters telling us that they had a court order to enter our home and take our belongings if we didn't give them a 'discounted' £500 odd, without having to worry about the house being broken into and potentially being physically attacked for objecting!!!

Bailiffs already have far too many powers and too little regulation, as is demonstrated by the way they are able to intimidate people who don't even owe them or their clients any money.

How many ex-wives do you have?
