  • If so, surely they will be looking for other areas where cuts can be made?

The senior management have put into place a series of measures so that no
    redundancies will be taking place.
  • What I do NOT need is people like you saying everything is just great and nothing to worry about. If I followed your advice, I would probably be starving two years hence.

All I have been saying is that the PORT is still in very good shape to see out this recession and will be in a much stronger position as well.
If you follow advice from some of the posters on here then heaven help you because you are going to get in one hellava mess!

    I share your confidence:rolleyes:

    You better hope so!
  • Ok here we go.
They are called Ships because you can load a boat onto a Ship but not vice versa.
We call it a PORT because we handle all types of vessels from general cargo, roll on roll off, used to have passenger services and of course container ships.
    .

    What's a vessel a boat or a ship?

    A vessel holds things.

    Are you working boxing day?
  • Good evening pickles, I just happened upon this thread when I saw the alarming title.
Not working at the dock any longer, I'm not so up to date with things. In the last two days I have spoken with two relatives and a close friend, who all work on the port, they never mentioned an impending disaster for the town. In fact, one of them suggested Maersk would be/have signed a new long term contract with the port.

This on-coming recession may be different, but previous downturns have never really affected the port workforce - let's hope it proves the same this time around.

OK I would not say it's been shelved only that management didn't quite get their own way. As to any large company management will always be looking to cut cost and make savings especially in today's climate.

Thanks Jetski. The thing is, in the current climate there can only be one realistic conclusion drawn, can't there?

Puggles, weren't you still finding green shoots of recovery in the housing market as late as September this year? Don't you have previous when it comes to ramping long after the market's dead and don't you have a whopping great vested interest in doing so?

Next time the wife lets you out, take a walk down Hamilton Road, count the shops and recruitment agencies that have closed and ask yourself if it's really the responsible thing to be spouting this everything's-gonna-be-ok bullspit when really people need to be prepared for what comes after Christmas. It will be a bloodbath, it simply has to be; a five year old could grasp the next step - recession, less people buying, less stuff imported, less docker hours needed, no overtime, ????????? then what?

Maersk, let's see - haven't they just got rid of all their temps to cut costs? Hmmm.....!!
