  • Thanks Jetski. The thing is, in the current climate there can only be one realistic conclusion drawn, can't there?

Puggles, weren't you still finding green shoots of recovery in the housing market as late as September this year? Don't you have previous when it comes to ramping long after the market's dead and don't you have a whopping great vested interest in doing so?

Next time the wife lets you out, take a walk down Hamilton Road, count the shops and recruitment agencies that have closed and ask yourself if it's really the responsible thing to be spouting this everything's-gonna-be-ok bullspit when really people need to be prepared for what comes after Christmas. It will be a bloodbath, it simply has to be; a five year old could grasp the next step - recession, less people buying, less stuff imported, less docker hours needed, no overtime, ????????? then what?
    Mr tit,
You really are a doom monger who has not got a clue, time will tell and I look forward to hearing your apology in the new year.
You still have not named the 6 you quoted for and the reason why the last one closed down, or is that to hard for you. Or because it will not back up fiction take on the real situation.
  • Maersk, let's see - haven't they just got rid of all their temps to cut costs? Hmmm.....!!
Temp let me ponder on that! Oh thats right it means that they are used to fill gaps in the workforce until the regualars are fit and well again.

take a walk down Hamilton Road...
This is becoming the most parochial thread on MSE. What's next - discuss the front door colour of number 23 Hamilton Road?

I do actually have one more question for Mr. P. You obviously have a thing about the PORT rather than the Docks - but I don't get why it's so important to you? Is Port grander than Docks, is Docks the wrong name. I understand that a Port is where Ships come in to dock, but then Docks are where Goods are unloaded?

That is the single most ill-informed and ignorant thing you have posted to date, and that's saying something!

You are right PORT does sound more grander than docks and yes you are right again docks are where goods are unloaded.

So companies do not employ temps to cover missing members of staff?
  • This on-coming recession may be different, but previous downturns have never really affected the port workforce - let's hope it proves the same this time around.

Fortunately the port workers have for many years been able to achieve very high earnings through regular overtime and have lived their lifestyle around that, many have very big mortgages and rely on overtime for that reason, now overtime is virtually none existent many workers IMO will be suffering very hard financially in the coming year.

They don't normally get rid of the whole lot in one go! Temps tend to be extras more than anything, expendable. Very expendable in this case.

Look, you plainly cannot see beyond your corner of the docks; you seem to believe that management tell the truth and that if you're moving containers around all must be well with the world so you hang onto that mate, you're gonna need it and if it helps you have a merry Chrismas and denial is your thing, good luck to you.

Thankyou Jetski, the intelligent and thoughtful voice of Hutcheson Ports. You must get very lonely at work!!!

You have always been warned not to rely on overtime.
I admit I have liked the odd drop now and again but when it is not there you get to spend quality time with the family and our shift rota makes us feel that we are part time workers.
It is true that we have been able to achieve very high earnings in the past and when the dust settles it will be required once more and hopefully everyone will learn from this period of time.
