Yes, that's right, big boy: mock anyone who's being sensible and prudent.

Err I wasn't mocking you, it was a serious comment as I do believe that social breakdown is on the cards. Protecting your home and yourself is a sensible and prudent consideration.

I don't think that DIY cross-bow kits from China is serious comment; the trouble with any weapon (even supposing that I wanted one) is that it could be wrested from you and used against you. Drawing attention to your home by putting iron bars on the windows is not a sensible suggestion either - makes it look as if you have something especially worth breaking in for.

I happen to think that social breakdown is a possibility, too, but my down-at-heel 120-year-old backwater neighbourhood is highly unlikely to be affected. The gated communities at the top of the hill, more likely; or people coming out of Sainsburys being mugged (for their bags of food shopping).
    YouGov: £50 and £50 and £5 Amazon voucher received;
PPI successfully reclaimed: £7,575.32 (Lloyds TSB plc); £3,803.52 (Egg card); £3,109.88 (Egg loans)
  • Jetski, I don't have the option of discussing this in person with you or Pickles so you'll have to forgive me for asking: Does the above mean that a cost-cutting measure proposed by management has now been shelved? If so, surely they will be looking for other areas where cuts can be made?

OK I would not say it's been shelved only that management didn't quite get their own way. As to any large company management will always be looking to cut cost and make savings especially in today's climate.

If your home is secured then no-one is going to wrestle your weapon from you. And on the subject of drawing attention to your home, well look at it this way: shops that don't have any window protection get ram-raided...those that do tend not to get busted into.

Assuming that you won't be a target is not very sensible really. Gangs will most likely stalk the rural areas rather then the built up ones.

    I've been Money Tipped!
My mum lives in a village, everyone knows everybody kind of place. Last week some horrid person broke into her 8 year old car on the drive and pinched the CD changer from the boot!

Well, I didn't come down to earth yesterday but I am not as paranoid as you are. And I am not in a rural area.

Ok we all know MPH means Moves per Hour now. What is a Move? Is it a Container from Boat to Dock, or from Boat to resting place awaiting lorry collection, or Boat to Lorry? And I guess the MPH figure is calculated per man on the gang - so a gang of ten on 8 MPH is actually 80 moves?

So what I'd like really is a short answer expanding on this, plus whether you call 'em boats or ships, and why it is so important not to say dock, but to say port.

All I can offer in return is a single press of the thanks button. I am genuinely interested, this is not a wind up.

Perhaps you're right, but I do really hope it doesn't get to that stage i.e. social breakdown, lawless etc etc

    Ok here we go.
Lifting a container off a ship is classed as one move, likewise lifting a container back on a ship is classed as one move.
They are called Ships because you can load a boat onto a Ship but not vice versa.
We call it a PORT because we handle all types of vessels from general cargo, roll on roll off, used to have passenger services and of course container ships.
The original Dock Basin where the company started from used to be unloaded manually and could range from loose bulk cargo to just about anything.
Over the years we have moved almost every type of vehicle.
If you are really interested I will return later if you have more questions.

It would not be closed down for a cost cutting excercise but because it will speed up the expansion that is being worked on at the minute. This will allow the developers to work without having to consider people etc getting in the way.
You are assuming the reason for not closing down, I will find out the truth on my return after Christmas.
