OS Thread - Saturday 20th December

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Saturday 20th December. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning everyone!
5 days to go! :snow_laug :santa2: :xmassmile :rudolf:

Tru - my OH finishes work tomorrow and then is off over Christmas and this is the first time in about 8 yrs that he has had more than two days off at this time of year so I have a LIST of things for him to do!! Unfortunately, he has already given me a list of things he doesn't want to do and some of them over-lap.. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Halight - sorry to hear about your job, and good luck finding something else
JackieO - So sorry you have been through that again *hugs*
Thriftlady - Glad to hear he's on the mend
Mudgekin - Good luck on the job hunting front - still thinking of you and sending you lots of love
Hilstep - glad to hear you are feeling better honey and good to have you back with us. I was really touched by how you talked about your daughter. I wish my mum felt the same way about me, you obviously have a lovely relationship with her.
welcome2.gifColdstream - glad to have you join us!

Talking of virtual grannies - I would love a virtual mum please and I am 43!! I really miss mine. I also never had a grandma past the age of 8, and I do feel like I missed something not having her around as I grew up.

OS wise - having pasta with chicken, peppers and cheese sauce for dinner today and I have to finish making my cards and writing them. Also have two parcels to post (one of OHs jobs!!) but I doubt he will be awake in time so it might have to wait til Monday.

Still haven't done the tree - must be one of the last few! Am going to write a list of things to do shortly before the big day. Better put the BM on for lunch later too.

Hope you all have a great Saturday.
smileyhug.gifto everyone who needs them today, and getwell.gifto everyone who has the nasty flu bug.

    Morning all,

It's been a bit cooler here today. Lovely breeze. I mowed & whipper snipped this morning & then helped DH in the veggie garden. Ironed & made lists this arv. :D DS1 came and got DGS late morning. He had a great time in the pool yesterday. Ninny hopped in too. :D Not much room in there but at least it's wet and cool.

Thought I'd post the pictures of him giving out the treats we made here , here & here. I can't stay long as I'm going to have a shower and head out the door.

Taplady It takes a while to sink in. Friends & family leave such a void when they die. Not sure if we ever get over it. The ache just gets duller.

<hugs> to those not well or down. Will pop in later when I get home. Have a lovely day. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

Good morning MSD and all who follow.

I hope everyone who has been ill is feeling a lot better today.

    Welcome back to you, Hilstep.

Well, not long to go now, is it? I have some more wrapping up to do but DH is working all day today so that gives me some extra time in which to get it done - I shall do his today and then sort through the pressie stash to do DGS and DGD's. They each have birthdays in January; I've already bought enough pressies for Christmas and their birthdays - it's just choosing which presents for which occasion! I've almost finished the knitted monkeys I'm making for them - I just have to stick the 'googly' eyes on them. DH says he'll help with the wrapping up tomorrow. Typically, he doesn't think to take the price tags off so I shall have to do that for him first.

Dinner tonight has been deliberately planned so that I can settle down to the Strictly final; stew left over from Thursday plus a 'steamed' pudding that is made in the microwave. I only found the recipe a couple of weeks ago and we've had it several times, because you can vary the flavour. It's so easy, turns out well each time and is delicious. Here's the recipe:

    Quick 'Steamed' Pud

    2ozs marg
    2ozs sugar
    2 eggs (beaten)
    2ozs SR flour

Mix all the ingredients together. If it feels too stiff and dry, add a little milk. Grease a pudding dish and cover the bottom with jam (or syrup, stewed apple and sultanas, plums, lemon curd, marmalade - whatever takes your fancy); pour the sponge mixture on top and cook in the microwave, medium power for 2 to 3 mins. (My microwave is 850 watts and the sponge takes 2.5 mins) It tastes just like a steamed pudding. It's one of those recipes that can be whipped up and cooked quickly so it's really handy.

I have some of my own work to do so I'll try and get that done this morning plus I want to make a table decoration to go on the table for Christmas dinner, so I shall be kept quite busy.

Well, I'd better go and get the breakfast ready. I hope you all have a good day.

Aussie - lovely photos; DGS is gorgeous. I had a nose at the other photos/videos - lovely cats but is the spider in the outdoor photo real? It looks disgusting!

Sitting here in sunny Essex - not really but had now got my SAD Light Box, it sure takes some getting used to :rotfl: but hopefully will work.

Didnt get on here yesterday - dont know where the time went. Both kids have broken up from school and DD is in the worst mood ever, think it is because she has got her exams when she goes back and is meant to revise everyday apart from Xmas & Boxing day. DD is the laziest child ever - this will be fun.

We are off tomorrow to stay in a Travel lodge hotel in Covent Garden and wont be back till Monday evening so I need to go all my monday paperwork today so I shall be in the office most of the day. OS will be done by OH who is getting much better at it but I must make sure he doesnt out too much washing powder in the wm.

Cant wait for Strictly tonight - always feel so sad when it finishes.

Off now, have a great Saturday.

    Morning all

Up stupidly early for a Saturday, but just woke up and was wide awake...why does that never happen on the weekdays when I need to get up and do a million and one things to get everyone out the door?

Managed to pop to Asda quickly yesterday to look at their £1 gift sale - managed to pick up 4 things that DD2 had on her xmas list that I'd refused to buy at full price...but at £1 each I was more than happy.....got a couple of bits for DD1 to balance things out (no idea why I feel they need to have the same amount of pressies it's not as if they'll ever sit there and say - ok before we open them - let's just check and make sure we've got the same amount.....is it? )

Got back from doing the last of the shopping to find the fridge had died...the light was on but it wasn't cold...unplugged it, plugged it back in - nothing. Rang MIL who keeps a spare "drinks" fridge running in her garage and arranged to go pick it up until we could organise delivery of a new one (I can't cope with a small fridge) Being the angel that she is, she gave us the money to buy a new one as an "extra" christmas pressie :j . Should be delivered on Monday. Of course by the time we'd got home the old one was working  but it stopped half an hour later.

Blanched down my veg for Christmas dinner last night, that's safely in the freezer, all the shopping is done, if I don't have it now, we won't be having it at all.

Going to make some mini sponge cakes today for DD's to decorate with snowmen (as seen on the celebrations board) and get some pizza dough made for tea tonight....I do a yeastless version as I still seem to be having issuse with yeast, it's a slightly more stodgy dough but still lovely.

Will be popping out to watch the towns lantern parade later - all the local schools make big paper lanterns, they put tea lights in them and then walk through town and down to the harbour, where they set the lanterns out to sea....they have a funky marching band with them and it's really lovely.

Hope you all have a fab day.

    Hello peeps:j
Finished work yesterday, had a few whiskies in the pub but was good and arranged for DH to collect me at 2pm so did not suffer from after effects of alcohol :p
Hope to get the tree out of the loft today (DH's job) all set for 'kids (DD24 and DS22) to put it up when they come 'home' tomorrow. I'll do some wrapping today as haven't done any yet.
Going to finally make the cake today. The fruit has been soaking in copious amounts of alcohol for about 2 months.
Other plans include a tidy up and hoover round, washing of one dog's bedding..... think that's about it. Oh, I still have the last single bed to make up but all the bedding is ready.
I should have a rummage in the fridge and make some room for frozen yorks and roast pots and parsnips (ssshhhh!!! Not OS but it's a slight cheat for me at this time of year). Think we have some HM spag bol in there so that will be tea sorted for tonight.
Hope everyone enjoys their weekend. Please don't rush about thinking you have to be wonder woman/man. I have finally realised the flylady concept of ditching perfectionism (I'm not that with house work but I do tend to get like that for Christmas so everything is 'perfect and magical') - I haven't ironed the duvet covers! yippee! I can still welcome all children 'home' but they don't have to have perfectly ironed bedding at Christmas!

    Morning.
Just made it out of bed after finishing work at 2am. Nothing much happened thankfully. I think the man flu is almost gone, just the tale end of the cough and congestion.
Working at 5pm, so not sure what to do until then. I feel like watching TV or doing nothing in particular, I probably won't be allowed to do that.
I think the sis in law may be coming up, so that might give me some breathing sapce.
Well, have a nice day and don't spend too much

Pooky - good idea blanching the veggies ready for Christmas! I'll do that tomorrow when I'm cooking the roast. I've already decided to cook the turkey the day before, as well as the bacon-wrapped sausages (without which my lot don't think it's Christmas dinner!) For the first time ever, I am determined not to spend the whole of Christmas morning in the kitchen!

Pam - I hope there's not too much mayhem! When mine were small, the few days after they had broken up before Christmas were the worst!
