You could also place a freezer bag in a freezable container and fill with your casserole/stew. When frozen remove and freeze in just the bag and then repeat process with a fresh bag.
I 'invested' in some containers from Makro a while ago - again they are like the clear plastic one's take aways come in. I use them for all sorts - freezing, storring tablets, sewing stuff, giving height to my displays at parties (I do party plan) and lots of other things. They cost approx £5 + VAT for 50 - so similar unit price as above, but bigger outlay.

I got loads of really sturdy ones with blue clip-on lids at Matalan - not sure how much exactly but definite cheapness, and they hold a litre.0

You can put cooled stew in freezer bags and rest them in your casserole/serving dishes while they freeze. Take them out of the dish and store just in the bag. Then you can take them out of the bag and put them back to defrost/cook in the same dish.
You need to make sure there aren't any folds in the bag or you'll find it really difficult to get the stew out when it's still frozen!"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
Most of my freezer tubs come from the same place you originally thought of: ie the ice cream counter!
I do have some that came from Ikea, and were very reasonable.
The other thing I use, which also keeps freezer space down, is ziplock bags. These make very flat packs of stew or whatever it is, and also defrost very quickly as they are so flat (oh dear, flat packs - I seem to have come back to Ikea!)0 -
redballoon wrote:The reason I ask is because i have loads of home grown veggies that need eating up so was going to cook a casserole/stew and freeze it to eat at a later time. But i dont have any decent tubs to store it all in. I have thought about using an ice cream tub but we still have ice cream in it! :rotfl:
Anyone got any good recommendations? Cheap ones please!!

Same as other posters, but also try your local pound shop, as they often have nice packs of plastic containers for....yes....it's gonna shock you...£1!!:rotfl:0

With stuff like soups and stews, I tend to pour it into a freezer bag, allow to freeze flat (on a baking sheet or chopping board to catch any leaks), then you can stack them or store vertically. They take up less space like this. With things you want to freeze without sticking together (such as rashers of bacon or veggies) I freeze them loose on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag, so they stay separate.
