  • ...and sometimes the postman just delivers without getting a signature!** I've stopped using the "signed for" service for this reason.

** I've had "signed for" items put thru the door without the postman getting a signature and I've sent several "signed for" items, that I know have arrived, but never get tracked on the system.

I sent an envelope special delivery a few weeks ago.
I started to get angry when I saw on the Royal Mail website that it hadn't yet been delivered the next day.

It actually had. Turned out that the Royal Mail website wasn't up-to-date!

the RMgtt guns are getting old now
incidents of gun failures whilst not common do happen
    this can cause track issues
the new PDA units havent yet been programmed for indoor use

I recently applied for a fixed bond account and sent everything I needed (ID, application & cheque) via special delivery. Now it has been over 48 hours and the letter is still down as "progressing through our network" on the royal mail track and trace.

I thought special delivery was supposed to be quick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the cheque isnt received in time I will miss the guaranteed rate!
Was it sent to a UK address? I sent one to an address in Eire and it took three days to reach (or at least be confirmed at) it's address.

It says on the receipt guaranteed delivery date 16th. In that case I may be due a refund as they have failed in their service?

Not necessarily ... as post #2 and others, the more likely explanation is that the feedback to tracking is always slow. Add that to the fact the Bank you sent the cheque to doesn't update immediately ..... and that's why you've no positive view in either direction.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • Thanks all. I will speak to somebody there tomorrow to see whats going on as the point of special delivery was to get it there quickly.

Rob, I've sent 4 x SDs in the past week -- a dear do, but personally I think worth it with valuable documents for the next day delivery, particularly now in the Christmas rush. All arrived the next day before 1pm as now confirmed by T&T on the Royal Mail website, but not all show electronic proof of delivery with the actual signature and time. The two that do were to the Halifax and show they were signed for at 6:50am next day. The only one containing a cheque was delivered last Thursday but it wasn't banked till Friday (I assume, as it didn't clear from my bank till Tuesday), and I imagine others may take longer, possibly not till they process the application, and if there's a backlog....

From memory with past SDs it's sometimes taken about 48 hrs before T&T confirms delivery date on the website, but I haven't had one fail to have got there next day (yet!).

  • Even though the website still says the letter is 'progressing through our network' I have checked my account and phoned them also and they have confirmed it all arrived etc. What a terrible service from royal mail - you would think that paying £4.60 for ONE SMALL LETTER would be enough for them to invest in a good tracking system. You can see why they are looking at privatisation.

    why what would that change?
PDA units are in use for van drivers so provide live tracking
however getting a tracking PDA unit thats shockproof, waterproof, compact and has a 5 hr plus battery life for walk posties is a tricky order to fill
