I also think my contentment comes from having this community to share that with.

Well that's interesting. They did have strong community spirit in the past. I know that from talking to the oldies I have worked for.

    Morning everyone...

I MUST do a NSD today...I got a bit down yesterday, thinking about all the things I need for my home that I can't afford and I suppose I was feeling a bit sorry for myself. My usual solution (before this challenge :D ) would have been to get online and start ordering loads of stuff. But I didn't.

Hope everyone is ok and a big hug to those who need one.
  • I think so. It was more a case of pride in your simple accomplishments, than in materialistic wealth and what 'gadgets' you owned.

Talking of gadgets, I have my BM working in middle of my lounge carpet at the moment, with the kettle just to the side of it. Today will be a NSD, I am determined, since I haven't managed one YET this month. I know all my spending off late is the fact that I am wanting to make up for living in a work site at present. Admittedly it is all stuff I would have needed throughout the year, I just happened to have bought it all in the first week. Or though this months spends will look atrousious, atlest next months will be alot lower.
Today I need to try and arrange DD's room so I can roll her carpet up.
Also putting off doing the ironing, but know I have to do it. Its getting rather high again. So much for keeping on top of it after xmas:o:o:o

I couldn't agree more with BB. Having someone to 'talk to' and discuss this 'way of living' with makes it soooooo much easier :T

I don't have a Mr M close enough to merit buying the paper for the 'freebies', but I am heading up to Mr T this week and next for the Daily Mail

I'm collecting the 'Classics Collection Series 2' DVDs that are coming with it. I find the free CDs/DVDs a good way to build up a selection of listening/watching material, but in the past DH would have read the papers (the one thing he gave up when we had to cut back), so nothing got wasted. As such I'm going to set myself a 'challenge' to spend a bit of time each day having a read of the paper -- could be enlightening as I don't follow the news by radio/TV/Internet/papers unless someone points something out to me, mainly 'cos I find most of it too depressing
(Shall have to remember to charge these to my 'anything else' budget!)

Wow! Thanks! Im planning to shop at Mr M tomorrow anyway. Must remember Daily Mail! Re Scottish power-the people I know wouldnt be on the online tarriff. One of them didnt want her payments to go up and changed from DD to quarterly now. Crazy! So she will have a huge winter bill to pay. Ive just left mine alone(EDF)as I know that over a period of time it will be adjusted correctly-different if changed circumstances but Id rather be in credit than owing them loads.
I recently cancelled my direct debit with them to go back to quarterly billing because they wanted a ridiculous amount each month. They won't let me go back to quarterly billing though and insist i am on monthly cash plan which is more than direct debit. I am being threatened with recovery even though my bills are paid up to date. It is just because i am not paying their monthly installment - that i don't want anyway.

Haven't read any of the posts yet, so hope everyone is doing OK
Will catch up after work/washing/shopping and emergency repairs to greenhouse, which miraculously survived the storms. :j
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Frugal living challenge - living on little in 2025 while frugalling towards retirement.
  • good connection grandma - about the oldies and their community spirit in days gone by. And thinking back, being a good housekeeper/manager would have been a source of pride for women too.

HH6 - well done for not going for the spend - a great step forward (I hereby confess I was so excited by thoughts of ;'new accessories' I could buy for my revamped kitchen I couldn't get to sleep for ages last night. Fortunately today it's way too wet to go shopping and there has been time for frugal sense to kick in:D .

Frugulfying/simplifying plans for today 12th Jan

Taka, I agree with BB entirely on that one x

HH62, well done on not spending :T

I love the idea of 'frugal sense' BB - that is how we stop ourselves buying unnecessarily and only getting things we truly need/want :T
CW, try Freecycle for the CDs if you don't really want the paper.

Off to have a bath, n sleep due to severe pains all through back and front of me  Catch up later x
