  • Chardana, I really feel for you. I was in a similar position last year - I had to decide if I was going to go back to work after being off sick with depression or leave.
What is it about the phones that you can't face? Do you have an occupational health dept at your company? I was referred to them where I worked, as I could not cope with doing my job (checkouts in a busy supermarket) and they were very compassionate, and looked at the options open to me. I also found it helped writing to my mgr and explaining exactly what it was about my job that I found difficult, why that was and several potential solutions to these problems. I knew that if I talked to her face to face I would get too emotional, and it gave her time to think things over without having to answer me straight away. Sometimes, even though we think people know what is causing us a problem, they don't and it's important to explain exactly what we can't cope with, why that is, the effect on our health...
In the end, I decided that as work is such a major part of life I wanted a job that I enjoyed and that didn't make me so ill, and so they sacked me (I'd been off sick for six months at this point, and they had been soooo patient, so it was fair enough) and I got a job that is much more enjoyable and that I can cope with - I have depression and agrophobia, so I need a job that is not stressful, not in a busy crowded place, and I'm pleased to say that although I had a panic attack every day in my old job I haven't had one since I left there.
I am NOT telling you to get a new job, just relating my own experience. I did find the occupational health dept helpful, and my mgr was much more understanding once I'd explained to her in the letter what my problems were in detail, and how they affect the way I behave and interact with others, and how they affect my ability to do various tasks, and how doing or not doing various jobs or being in certain situations can make me feel so ill that I have to leave work early and go home. They did their best to adjust things so that I could cope better after I'd explained things clearly. I hope that's the case with you.

Chardanna, Im so sorry to hear of your problems. I can't deal with phones either and the idea of a job answering them is my idea of hell. I think you need to see your doctor and explain your predicament to him/her. He may be able to give you a letter to say that you are not able to work on the phones as it is detrimental to your health. The Citizens Advice Bureau can also be a great help in situations like this. They will know more legally about whether your employers can cut your pay.

I know how you feel because I had to leave a job at HSBC because I got so stressed and just couldn't do it any longer.

Yep, 1984 is the year of my birth! I was in a big supermarket as I said, but now I am a carer for Surrey County Council. I'm still doing my training, but it's really great because apart from occasional team meetings, I can work one to one with elderly/disabled people in their homes and taking care of their needs takes my mind off my own problems. It is a responsibility, but on the whole we are just there to encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves, and we are allowed to sit down and have a chat with them too, so it's right up my street! And I'm on the bank staff so I just let my mgr know my availability and she lets me know when she needs me to work. It's turning out great so far, because I can't cope with pressure, even the pressure of having contracted days to work - if I worked Mon and Tues for example every week, just knowing that I need to feel well on those days every week would make me ill! So this way, I can just say, sorry I don't feel so good this week, I can't work, or I feel great this week, I will work every day.
Your job sounds so stressful, I'm so sorry for you. I really hope things work out well. How long have you been ill with depression?

  • I did that sort of care before finance actually, both contracted & bank working, find shift work really difficult though as I find I don't do anything in spare time then, especially if I was working late- I'd just sit waiting to go into work!- Spoke to my mum earlier though & she thinks I should go back to that as she believes I was happier, Not sure I was though myself

I think I was quite savvy on this ocasion when depression came about as I got to Dr as soon as I realised, been on meds this occasion for only about 10 weeks, had it bad about 3 yrs ago too... except I buried my head in the sand that time & therefore was ill for long time before I faced up to it.
Gonna see how I feel when I get up tomorrow & see if I can face Dr & Occ Health in one day. :o

Are you working enough to cover your bills & stuff at mo then?

  • No, not really. I've only been doing it since the beginning of December, and I get paid a month in arrears so I won't get much as I took things really slow to start off with and only did 10 hours for the whole of Dec! My OH is working though and is very supportive. He is very patient with me and doesn't pressure me to work more. I just do as much as I can cope with. As I said I'm still training, so it's early days but I'm enjoying it so far. I do get very stressed and feel I should earn more, but I can't. If I push myself too hard I get very ill and can't do anything.
Glad you went to Dr asap, funnily enough I had a serious bout of depression 3 years ago too and was very ill for quite a while. I think it is worse this time though, but I'm learning to cope with it, and live with it. See you tomorrow, I'm going to sleep now. Absolutely shattered! Take care
