I had no luck with S&D BUT I've been plugging away into these early hours and found that if in Safe Mode, I ran the HijackThis installer directly instead of saving it to my PC first, it installed!
Here is the resulting logfile:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

I've tried to update to XP SP3 recently but I think this bug is stopping me from doing so. Until now I did think the automatic updates would automatically do the business for SP3?
Perhaps I should also add that I was able to install MalwareBytes using the same method as above, the difference being MalwareBytes won't actually run after it's been installed. The Cakes - new release now on Spotify!0 -

you need to navigate to the malwarebytes directory and rename the exe file to something else , same with hijackthis
if that does not work then try this:-
Download
Jumpstart__C.zip
Save and extract its contents to your desktop where it will create a new folder....then ignore it while we do the following
Go to the Control Panel.
Select System -> Hardware -> Device Manager.
Select View from the Menu, then "Show hidden Devices".
Expand "Non Plug and Play Drivers". , Right click on the TDSSserv.sys driver and select Properties, Stop and Disable it.
You will be asked to restart ,Select No at this time
Now open the Jumpstart_C folder and double click on the Runme.bat. Disregard any error messages that may flash up
The Computer will Restart
it may be the tdssserv rootkit , once you have done the above it may be possible to run mbamEx forum ambassador

I couldn't see these in the list of things to fix but the other occurrences in your list were there and I was able to stop them in Task Manager (though they still keep reappearing). I've just re-read part of this thread and perhaps I should have restarted my PC straightaway (?) as I then did a scan with MalwareBytes which I was able to open after changing it's filename. I wasn't able to access their website to update the definitions but this is the log:run hijack again and FIX the following ~

you have not fixed anything with malwarebytes
run quick scan (will take about 20 minutes) in normal windows mode (not safe mode) and Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.
you can do a manual download of the latest definitions from
http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/database.jsp
and run the file to update the main Mbam programEx forum ambassador

I was just waiting to check it was okay to delete everything so left it open. After removing everything I was able to update MalwareBytes online and access the anti-virus websites again. I then did a Quick Scan which came up with a load more stuff that I've now deleted.
Things seem to be running smoothly again, so I guess it's just a case of uninstalling unwanted software?
Do you know if there's any way I can get the drive space back that disappeared?
Thank you both for your help.

do another hijackthis scan to be sure it's gone , post the log here
www.ccleaner.com
will remove all the junk thats built up
once I've reviewed the hijackthis log you need to go to
www.windowsupdate.com
chose "express" and update to Xp service pack 3
you may need to go back and update a 2nd time to get all the updates
then go back a final time , choose "custom" and download all the hardware updatesEx forum ambassador

All sorted, just CCleaner to go. Something good has come out of this as I thought all Windows updates were automatic before this happened.

I think I may have figured out why my hard-drive space was disappearing; my Dr Watson log was 7.3Gb so I've deleted it and unchecked "Append to Existing Logfile" in it so I hopefully won't get a file so large again.
I still feel pretty convinced that some data on my slave drive disappeared (I have no evidence apart from that I think there suddenly became a lot more space than there was, do you know if any of the malware could have deleted anything? The Cakes - new release now on Spotify!0
