I've voted with my download, and opted for Jeff Buckley's version, which, IMHO produces a nigh on perfect, soulful, understated and emotional performance of Cohen's classic. I am equally fond of KD Lang's version, who performs it with such perfection of pitch, and grace, but she's probably not 'pretty' enough for most to be interested. If beauty could be judged by a voice alone, she's win Miss World!

Whilst I like Cohen singing his own song, I find him much like Dylan, another excellent poet/songwriter, whereby the vocal talent and delivery simply aren't there, which is why All Along the Watchtower, for example, have had the cover versions rated over the original, such as Hendrix's (my personal favourite was the one by U2 from the Rattle and Hum album).

As for the Xfactor issue, I think there are just members of the public, who listen to the radio, pay their licence fee, and just wish the number 1 at Christmas wasn't totally hijacked by an artist who has the benefit of 3 months of advertising and hype to cattapult their 1st release to a guaranteed No.1.

Call me completely cynical, but it's not a complete surprise to discover that Cohen's latest box set is released by SonyBMG, the company Cowell's Syco label is part of, and the company that incorporated the Columbia label (that Cohen's earlier releases were on). It was either going to be that, or a Mariah Carey cover I suppose! Simon is, first and foremost, a business man, and having lost all his £ several years ago, he's likely to keep playing it safe to earn his £54m p/yr.:rotfl:

  • I'm not a big X Factor fan but I do think everyone needs a break in life to follow a chosen career - this is Alexandra's and she's earned it. She delivered a stunning performance Sunday. I'm not sure where I'd be if I hadn't had my little break into the career I wanted (35 year ago!). The Jeff Buckley version of H.... is great but - sadly - he doesn't need the break.

There was a clip of Jeff Buckleys version on breakfast this morning, noticed that it was on Sony BMG, so Cowell wins again, there aint no justice!

So this campaign against the X Factor is still earning him money? :rotfl:
  • Yeah but thats the nature of the music industry. its not the 80s anymore, there are very few major labels out there.

Its not nessacerilly a thing against cowell, its just a 'campaign' to open the christmas number one competition back up. It wont work...but its good to see what can happen if enough people are sick of a certain norm.

its the whole 'my vote wont matter' theory. Its easy to sit back and be cynical about an online movement because a bunch of people hold a version of the song dear and it's been !!!!ed all over by some generic singer. But buying that single has got Jeff Buckley to number 3 in the midweek sales.
  • Well dusted down my itunes account especially to buy this, I haven't bought anything for ages. I was thinking of getting the Rick Astley single as there is a campaign for that to be Christmas number one, but I'll stick with Jeff.
