I think it's a chart winner, though not an obvious choice for the X Factor.

The combination of a haunting melody (all those minor chords) and the complex and carefully crafted words (universal themes of love and loss) will have us all humming along.

Contrary to popular belief, Cohen's work isn't all doom and gloom - it's much more multi-dimensional - though few are likely to top the charts as this one will.

Buy Leona Lewis singing 'Run' instead, it's a much better song and she is a much better singer.

I also backed it at 16-1 :rotfl:

However the hype of X-Factor should ensure whatever dross they put out will get
    number 1. It's about 40-1 on now :(

I believe Tim Buckley also died and as the unproud owner of 2 albums (I was 18 and trying to be quirky) I can say that IMO he was most definately NOT the one with all the talent. *Prepares for attack*

Yep, I have Tim Buckley's album too and can confirm he was definately not the one will all the talent!

Also have Louden Wainwright Albums (rufus wainwrights father)he was around the same time as Tim. He is Much, much better!

    hear but get jons version

    Absolutely agree 100%!!!
Bon Jovi's live version of it is simply stunning. The O2 crowd was completely silent throughout the entire song........ and not because they didn't know the words!

I'm glad no one has mentioned a liking for katherine Jenkins's version yet, which really has to be one of the worst! I had a choking fit when I saw the advert for it on her album 'Sacred Arias'. :rotfl:
I never knew it was possible to sing a song without listening to the lyrics.

I think Alexandra is also a bit guilty of focusing on the hallelujah and making it into a kind of gospel hymn. But I was certainly glad it wasn't JLS's version I would be subjected to all through Christmas.

After listening to several of the versions, I still like Jeff Buckley's best and have downloaded it. Even if it get's to no2 it will be brilliant and I might even be willing to forgive Mr Cowell for making it happen!

"Leonard Cohen "Sings" ?............about as well as Bob Dylan........or Telly Savalas.
  • Cohen and Dylan may not 'sing' in the general sense of what is deemed as 'good' or in other terms being able to warble a bit and sing loudly. But Cohen and Dylan were both poets beyond the talents of most of the music industry today.

I think it covers loads of different emotions, from ecstasy and euphoria to broken and dejected bitterness. What it's actually about is the subject of lengthy debate, with the various religious and sexual undertones and so on. I suspect Simon Cowell doesn't have much of an idea, and Alexandra Burke even less. Radio 2 did an hour-long documentary on the song a while ago, which was very good.

At least half the verses are missing from the Alexandra Burke version, too, although very few people actually perform every verse Cohen wrote, including Cohen himself.

Two intersting articles on the song, especially some of the lyrical connotations:

BBCs take on various performers and some background to the lyrics:

As a teenager of the 60's I'm a great fan of Dylan but have to admit I prefer Buckley's version of Halleluhah. But hey - everything is personal taste and wouldn't we all be a boring set of b---ards if we all liked the same.
