Money Moral Dilemma: Would you pay a parking back hander?

  • Yep! A fiver or £14? I wouldn't be defrauding the company, the attendant would. It's his neck on the line, not mine. I just paid £35 for parking for 2 days. Not bad for a company that doesn't have to actually do anything for the money except provide a small square of land. I think the motorist is the one who is the victim here. I have extremely low principles which I often fail to achieve.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

I'd pay the £5 with the fervent wish that everyone who came after me would do the same.
In this way, the unethical extortionists who run these places might go out of business and be replaced by someone less profiteering and morally bankrupt.

This car park is an old railway coal yard - if you are lucky you might get to park in the dry under one of the arches out of the rain, the rest of it is just a couple of acres of gravel.
It is probably being used as a car park while the owners and the council haggle over its future. However the credit crunch has put a stop on progress.

The parking company has gone into administration, perhaps because it has lost control over its accounts and cash flow.

You are at the auction where the 2 years on the lease are being sold off.

Over to you - here is your chance to run an "honest fair" car park. Tell us what you would do.
  • Yeah I would give him the money
  • Damn right I would! Sod NCP and sod the local council - especially the extortionate Lib Dems.

I'm not going to justify it, obviously it's wrong, but like I said - sod it!

    Lib Dems?

Do they run your local council and have they upped the charges recently?
  • I have been in this situation before.

I paid the £2 to the attendant. and not the £12 tesco's were charging for a days parking.

Call me a theif or what ever. It was too good an oppertunity to pass up.
Esp. as I was working in that town centre for 6 months.

    I saved a MINT!!
  • Yes I Would Pay The Backhander, It Saves Me £9, Gives The Attendant And Extra £5 And Reduces The Massive Profit Margin Of The Fat Cat Who Is Charging £14. I Doubt The Company Is Charging High Prices To Discourage The Use Of Personal Vehicles, I Doubt They Are Trying To Encourage The Use Of Public Transport Or Alternative Means Of Travel And I Doubt They Give A Monkeys About Our Environment. Further, The Staff Working On These Sites Are Low Paid, Work Longer Than Average Hours And Are Obviosuly Freezing At This Time Of Year.

I Acknowledge I Am Making A Lot Of Assumptions But Given My Experience Of Such Organisations I Feel I Am Not Far Off The Mark!
    Oh how I dream............

You do make a lot of assumptions.

If you feel that the staff have poor working conditions and are cold (bless them) then why not just give them some money?
    Too altruistic for you?
Do you have to feel you are screwing the big bad company in order for you to feel good about your fraud?

Maybe you should write to the company instead of defrauding them - seems it can work

I still see and apprecate the opinions of both sides ... but I feel the british gov have the working man screwed into the ground so badly that people are rebelling at every opportunity ... the gov are going to be the cause of making us a third world country not the poor folks that have been worked and taxed to death in order to line the pockets of the upper classes.

You really need to have experienced it from both sides ... I used to have it all, now I have very little and I really see it differently now. I even had better morals at one time, but then at that time I could afford them

    Cheers

    ;)

I think you have struck the nail on the head here. We are always blaming someone else (Gov't, Big Business etc) for our own failings. Where is the personal responsibility, and looking at the majority of posts in this thread, where is the morality that holds our society together?

Society seems to be in pursuit of instant gratification rather than actually working hard then enjoying the fruits of our labour. That is why the world economy is in the state it is in.

Those of you who are would pay the back hander, clearly don't understand the concept of moneysaving. It is not about crime it is about taking responsibility for our own spending within the rules.

And if we all took personal responsibility for our actions, our society would be a lot better for it.
  • Der!!

Hello, some of you have no idea how to save money, if that is the case why are you here?

Pay him a fiver and say see ya next week.
