Money Moral Dilemma: Would you pay a parking back hander?

  • No. It's stealing. And lying.

I knew the cost when I voluntarily drove in, which means that I made a commitment and a promise. I wouldn't let myself down like that.

If you could be so blase about such a small amount, how could I trust you for more important things in life?

  • Yes - No problem - I love entrepreneurs, it has made the country what it is today!!!!
    Entrepreneur? That's fraud, not entrepreneurial!

Nope, I wouldn't give the attendant the money - it is stealing and fraud. I would also inform the company he works for. The cost of the car parking doesn't really come into it - you knew how much it would be when you parked there, although there is no way I would ever go to a car park that charges that much!

That might sound a lot in Saffron Walden, but in Central London that is the norm, I have seen much higher in the City, up to £25 a day in places.

I used to pay 13.50 a day parking in a car park so steep you had to take run up to get up the ramp, LOL, (it was in the foundations of a old demolished building) I nearly didn't get out on a few occasions, but it was the cheapest one around. They buy up any old bit of scrap land to use as a 'car park' and charge a fortune for it because they can.
And your car is not any safer, these places don't have security or CCTV and the guard doesn't give a toss.
He already gets paid to sit on his behind doing nothing all day. I'm not giving him any more for it, even if I do begrudge paying prices that high.
  • This is quite obviously fraud; quite amazing how many people are prepared to steal from the parking company. It is no different to shoplifting when you know your friend the security guard will turn a blind eye if you give him a backhander later on.
  • Yes I would pay the backhander, the parking company have probably already built this scenario into their profit projections when deciding on the £14 charge.
  • It is theft after all he is allready being paid.

  • This happened to me in a large airport car park, we had been away for a week and parked car, I was approached by attendant and gave him £40 as opposed to something like £90 !!! Bargain, think he took a shine to me !! HA
  • Not a chance!

For a start it's fraudulent as already pointed out but secondly, how can I trust that I wont get fined for not displaying a valid parking ticket or permit? I would run the risk of losing £5 to the attendant AND a hefty fine!
  • My scruples are disappearing with my bank balance....I would probably pay the price the attendant asked as long as I didn't think it was a trap or the company might chase me up later. Actually, the answer is I probably wouldn't be parking in one of those car parks any more anyway - would find somewhere cheaper, use a park and ride or get the train as I hate feeling ripped off.

Too right! They featured this very scam on The Real Hustle on TV a while back - they stuck 'Out of Order' notices on the ticket dispenser and had one of the guys stood next to the it, wearing a fluorescent jacket, told people to pay him and stamped 'receipts' for them. He raked it in, and if any of those people had been checked later, they'd have been fined. Same here - how would you know the attendant was genuine? Uniforms and ID are easy to fake.
