OS Daily Monday 15th December 2008

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Munday 15th December. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning. Another new week and another day closer to Christmas. I have the day off, so I plan to get some food shopping done. I see that Aldi is offering some cheese truckles today, so might get a few of those, and their veg is dirt cheap! 2.5kg of potatoes for 39p. That works out at £3.90 a sack which is £3 cheaper than the wholesale price.

I have man flu at the moment, so it feel like someone has beat me up as I ache all over. The cough and snot side of it has gone, but the aches are there, most annoying.

Pay day today, so a little overtime extra for me. Also my mortgage payment will be £85 lower, so quids in at present. The fact that my car needs a service and the heating boiler etc, I am trying to forget about.

Well OH has a job interview today, so not sure if I want her to get it or not. It's not teaching, but a support role in the naughty boys and girls section of school. Full time and guaranteed money, but is it what she really wants to do?

Coffee is on, so have a nice day and bring a cup over :coffee:

  • Morning N9eav,
Blimey it's early. Feel really tired as have had hardly any sleep. DS1 is off to B'ham Children's Hospital with OH for a minor surgical procedure today. He has to have a general so we're a bit worried about that. I hope he doesn't have to wait around too long, it is just a day case so he'll be back home later.

They've just gone -now I've got 'worst case scenario' thoughts running through my head:eek:

Anyway, try not to think about that -I've got my French class Christmas meal today provided DD is OK -she was coughing and sneezing all through the night and had a bit of a temperature yesterday evening. So, I might end up at home with a poorly child instead of out on the razzle -serve me right for not being with DS1 while he is in hospital -feel like a bad mother, don't know why really as he is with his dad and someone's got to be with the other kids.

OK, I've rambled far away from OS matters now-sorry:o

I've got a swimming lesson run to do later (provided DD is well) so I've defrosted a chickpea and chorizo casserole-type thing to have warming in the oven while we're at the pool.

Packed lunches are ham rolls, choc chip muffins and fruit. I'll probably just do toast for DD and DS2.

Tomorrow I must make some bread. Sometime this week I'll get a batch of mince pies done and some florentines (traditional Christmas treat in our family).

I've made and frozen cranberry sauce, prepped the chipolatas and bacon and frozen them. I'll make and freeze the bread sauce later this week too. I'm hoping to get the presents wrapped this week and cards done by the weekend. Tree is in the garden waiting to be brought in and decorated after school on Friday. Getting excited now -just hope everything's OK with DS1.

    Morning all,

Day off today, I only have three days this week then I am off for Xmas :T , I have to go to the Dr today for a smear test, (sorry if tmi) good to get that out of the way before Christmas.

I have also got to start to wrap presents, I really dont like doing it, but will have to start, I also need to order my Xmas food.

Lots of washing to do, and I need to change dd's bedding, ours was done yesterday, so will get a couple of loads done. Need to have a good clean through, and would like to clean out the kitchen cupboards, but we will see.

Smoky, glad you are all recovering fron the bug xx

    Taplady, hugs to you.

Hester, I hope you feel better soon xx

Hugs where needed have good days all xx

Thriftlady, good luck for your ds xx
  • Good Morning N9eav, Hester and all to follow, hope you too feel better asap. That cold/flu thing is not nice.

N9eav - good luck for OH, if she gets offered the job then she can think if she wants to do it.

Not particulary cold or wet here today. Have got to pop into town very quickly this morning as DDad asked me to get something for DSIS for Xmas from her kids as her ex doesnt bother. Think I will get her thoses furry slipper boots. Office then for the rest of the day but hope to get out and do the weekends ironing.

Audley End House was lovely yesterday, will definately go back there in the summer when all the rooms are open and we can wander more round the grounds. Everyone else might know this but I didnt realise that once Mincement actually had beef in it - they had the recipe in the kitchen. Also looked at a book called - Plain Food for the Working Classes, Sheeps Head Broth anyone??. Didnt buy it as we were on a tight budget yesterday.

Best get off now, need to wake DD up - her New Years Resolution will be to get and use and alarm clock.

    Have a good day.

Thriftlady - Good Luck for DS - he will be fine
Redruby - Good luck for your little procedure too :D

    Good morning everyone.

N9EAV and HESTER - I hope you both feel better soon.

Thriftlady - I'm thinking about your DS1 - he'll be fine, although I know you'll worry because you're his Mum. Don't feel guilty for not being with him; as you say, someone has to look after the other children and he's with his Dad.

Well, DH has just left for work; he was home for most of last week between jobs, so I didn't get a lot done. Today, I shall whiz through the chores then spend the rest of the day wrapping up. I always forget how time-consuming it is! I have a couple of things recorded that I'll watch while I'm doing it.

Dinner tonight is spaghetti bolognaise followed by an interesting apple and sultana sponge I made in the microwave yesterday, which was delicious with custard. DH made his Victoria sponge cake, too. He requested one a few weeks ago so I taught him how to make one. He still can't complete the process without supervision, though, but the results of the joint effort are worth the hassle.

It doesn't seem so cold today so I shall pop out later and deliver the cards to the neighbours, and then I just have a few more to post tomorrow - with a couple of parcels - and that's what I call the 'outside' bit of Christmas done. I shall post things in faith that they'll get there because there's supposed to be a postal strike in a few days time, in certain areas.

Well, I'd better get on. The BM and the WM are on and I have a small pile of ironing that I will ignore until tomorrow, I think.

(((Hugs))) to everyone who is feeling sad, anxious or poorly.

Used to laugh and call him names

    They never let poor Rudolph

Thanks for the carol, Tru! I loved what you said about being a good mother and you're so right!

RedRuby - just lie back and think of England! I had mine in March and, much as I hate having it done, it's one of those things we just can't avoid, can we? Treat yourself to some choccie afterwards - that's what I do!

Well ds has gone to school, another has had sore throat over the weekend.

I need to catch up with laundry, clear up the rest of the mess from visitors yesterday, couple of hours in work (tomorrow is last day before Christmas) collect dh from airport later and then dash off to sewing club this evening, need to get something ready to take with me to do, though mince pies are promised, so not sure how much sewing will get done.

Left overs (lots of soup and cake) from yesterday for lunch and tea today. need to make muffins, got the banana stuff out of the freezer yesterday then decided I didn't have time./didn't need them. My birthday in the hols, so will make them and take into work tomorrow.

Hope you and yours are all recovering.
