Just to make sure, do you mean http://www.discountletting.co.uk/ as I see other companies advertising under this name/keyword. If so, I've looked at discount letting before and are certainly one of my considerations.0

When i find the house i want, i will advertise on discount lettings and see what happens, just to get the right move coverage, as most of the houses in my area on right move have been let.
I specifically mention 'No Agencies please' in my adverts. I arrange the viewings at a convenient time for both me and my potential tenant and i show them the property. I also mention some advantages of dealing with me (the landlord) directly as oppose to dealing with an agent who probably has many many tenants to look after. Also, both of us will save on a lot of fees. I also arrange tenant checks myself once ive chosen my preferred tenant.
Gumtree is great but always be vary of scammers/idiots. Ive been using it for a long time now and have never had any issues.0 -
Is Gumtree anything like Loot because I always found my relative was getting a really poor quality of tenant when she advertised on Loot? Can individuals advertise on Rightmove?
I've never used Loot but having a quick look it does look very similar.
Individuals can't advertise on Rightmove. I believe agencies pay something like 500 quid per month for an account on Rightmove.0 -
I just read your post and I don't know if this will help or not.
I used to work for a private company letting their own properties, mainly students, untill last month. We used a new company called Make Ur Move to help let our houses because they advertise on Rightmove etc and it was cheaper for us to use them than pay subscription costs to Rightmove direct.
We also used Homes 4 U, which we have used for a few years now and they both generated around the same amount of viewings and lets. I think they also do private landlord lets.
I don't know what they would charge because we had a commission deal with both due to the amount of property we had with them, Make Ur Move where cheaper but I think it was because they were pretty new I would think they are both worth checking out.0 -

How do you manage to avoid the scammers/idiots?
The forums on Gumtree are pretty helpful in helping you to spot scammers and i can smell an idiot from a mile away, ive been a landlord for a long time now. And like i said i meet up with them, ask them a few questions about their current tenancy, job, etc. I obviously ask for a current/previous landlord reference, a letter from their employer to prove they are in employment and a deposit upfront.
Pretty much what an agency will do if they can be arsed and i don't charge them 250 quid for doing so.0 -
Sounds like you are a good landlord, BlameTheGame. In my experience, not all landlords are like that and tend to just leave it to a letting agent.0
