Asda Extra Special Ham - Was £15 now £5

But that's only because it has been so well disguised, if the truth be known this stuff is about as meaty as your average sausauge unless of course you count trotters, sinew, fat, grissle, cartilidge, lips etc as meat of course. There is also the question as to its origin, bear in mind the recent withdrawal of pork and beef products in Ireland and the fact that this product is merely cured in England to provide a flag of convenience.
  it could be irish? its not really 100% ham??

In case any one is deterered by some of the previous comments, I have bought and eaten the ham and I can confirm that it is not reconstituted meat, it is a whole piece of ham.
The poster is correct, some cheaper ham (and you can tell by the uniform texture and shape) is made in this way you do get what you pay for with meat and Adsa would be taking the p*** if they tried to sell something like that for £15.
Hope that clears everything up.0 -
I went to my local ASDA last night to but some of this and I must admit it didnt look nice at all, I gave it a miss!
I cant believe that it was ever sold at £15 previously.0 -
Also I forgot to add,
You should not freeze ham as due to the salt content freezing and defrosting can affect the flavour and texture, I'm not too worries as I have cut mine up into smaller bits to use in pasta sauces etc.
I wouldn't like to freeze the whole lump as it would take ages to defrost and might go a bit mushy. Someone suggested0 -
Oops, my son hit the keyboard and it posted! The suggestion about freezing slices between baking paper sounds like the way to go if you want to keep it for buffets etc.
I can't be certain but I very much doubt it is frozen already as it would mean the quality would be compromised and that it has a long enough shelf life anyway.
HTH x0 -
I looked at these today but did not get one as it say's in small print not to freeze. Still a great buy for some thoughThanks for any help and advice given

Just a note to all who have asked if the Wiltshire Ham is already cooked and if you can freeze
It is cooked and ready to eat, just needs slicing, I normally buy Extra Special cooked meats and bought this joint this week and it is lovely! I have also frozen it and it tastes just as good when defrosted
There is also a pre sliced Extra Special Wiltshire Ham for £10 which is also really nice and a really good price!
Try it you will enjoy it!0 -
I told my Dad about the ham but apparently he purchased pork instead (go figure!). Anyway, he got a massive piece of uncooked pork for £6.0
