Was meant to ask before, TENS machine, is there a reason you can't use it before 37wks. Does anybody know?

Hi Mel,
It helps the cervix thin and to start dilating and can cause premature labour, some studies show a TENS unit will stimulate the nerves of the uterus and induce labor.
HTH;)

feely - try not to worry too much as that'll push it higher. My dad has high blood pressure (obviously not pg related) but they control it very easily and effectively and I imagine that they will kepe a close eye on you and medicate where appropriate.
In my mind, it's always better to know about these things as they will be checked on regularly. The big problems arise when these surprises appear without warning.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -

weezl - do you know much about TENS? My reflexologist suggested that I use my TENS for an hour a night to 'build up my endorphins and receptors'?
Will this work? will it bring on labour? will it reduce the effectiveness of the TENS when I use it in labour?????Im confused (doesn't take much these days  ) Oh and BTW I'm overdue so bringing on labour isn't a problemr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
*this might be tempting fate, but had a few cramps this afternoon and while I'm not thinking labours started, i think I might be moving in the right direction - so labour dust please*
Oh, I've only just popped in to see if there was any news from you! :j
I'll keep an eye out for you in the Parent Club!

Come on r mac! :-)
(P.S. My midwife told me my TENS was fine to use during pregnancy but only above the waist as it could mask any pain from something being wrong. So, I'd ask your midwife personally)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -

Hi r.mac,:D
Labour dust wishes aplenty!
It may help to speed things up, and shouldn't make any difference to how effective it feels in labour since it's not something you can develop a resistance to, like drugs, because it works using a 'gateway' or distraction of the brain method of pain control. You can't exhaust this method like you can with medication.
Also found this about a recent study of TENS:
'One more recent trial of TENS, including 104 women, found shorter duration of first-stage labor among nulliparas and multiparas, and later introduction of pain medication (5.2-cm dilation vs 2.5 cm among nulliparas, 7.1 cm vs 4 among multiparas) in the TENS users than the control groups. The majority of all TENS users considered TENS effective for pain relief and would use it again in future labors.
Experienced practitioners state that TENS may be more effective if initiated in early labor, presumably to allow for a build-up in endorphin production before the pain becomes severe. Furthermore, TENS may be more effective for relief of back pain than labor pain in general, but only 2 older studies have investigated this possibility.'
Sorry for the techno speak, you are a nullipara if you have no children yet, and a multipara if you have already given birth before. Scuse the geekiness, I'll go away now!:D
