Floozie's Lightbulb Diary

  • I've woken up now, first day of my holiday and don't think I can be fagged doing any cleaning!!! I did, however, give the bathroom a good going over yesterday, on my hands and knees scrubbing floors, and toilets and everything!

Okay, so my foray to Aldi yesterday was not a success seeing how I managed to spend £78.93 between Aldi and Farmfoods, and I still had a good amount of food in the freezer at home anyway. I did it the wrong way round and went to Farmfoods first and then Aldi. Of course with Aldi being the new supermarket I was like a child in a sweetshop wanting to try all the new and lovely-sounding things. Anyway, freezer is stuffed to bits so maybe I wont need to do a frozen shop next Sunday?

I went on e-bay yesterday evening (bad, bad move) and spent £13.83 on some control underwear.

We also went to the pub for a couple of drinks, me and DH, and spent £7.20 on two drinks each (what a rip-off, no wonder we don't go out!!)

Managed not to buy any newspapers, I went with DS1 on his paper-round and read all the headlines on all the different papers paid for by others, and then mum came up and donated her Sunday people.

    Money in purse: £40.80
    Money in bank: £763.97
    Days to payday: 25

Yesterday's tea: Roast Chicken, Mash, Yorkshire Puddings, Peas and Sweetcorn.

I've let DH take the car to work today (rather than me drop him off). I figured that if I got bored the temptation of going to the shops would be too much, and if I don't have a car with me, I cant be bothered going on the bus...however it also means I can't just get up and go to the tip or charity shop If I get motivated to do some cleaning!

A lie in was really nice, woke up three hours after I normally get up!

Having seen that they are doing potatoes, bananas and grapes for 49p this month, I need to get to Aldi before the end of the month!

Cleaned the kitchen yesterday, it was spotless and sparkling and today...it's not spotless and sparkling and all needs doing again. it's not fair! Also got laundry that was lurking in the kitchen clean and dry.

Finally got round to reading the Sunday papers that my mum brought up and was delighted to see that Saturday's bonus ball was number 12 (mine) hooray - so I will have some money to come when I get back to work on Monday. I'm not sure how much it will be, it depends on when it was last won, but it'll be enough to pay for my ninja knickers!

Last night's tea was: Spaghetti Bolognese. Hope DH gets his teeth sorted tomorrow as I'm running out of stuff to do with mince. He's stopped looking like shrek but says he can still feel a lump and can't see the dentist will be able to remove (the tooth) tomorrow.

Also remembered with shock that I hadn't done my Child Tax Credits return form, so did that last night and need to post in time today (when the rain stops, that is).

  • This is today's update normally done tomorrow done today!

It looks like we have some closure regarding the issue of DH's car, which has been in the garage for the last ten days. I spoke to the mechanic today who has been trying to source a second-hand engine. Apparently they are rarer than hen's teeth. I thanked the mechanic for looking for us, and asked where the nearest scrapyard was. He said if I was going to scrap it then he would buy it off us for spares. He offered £200 and told me to go away and think about it. I rang a local scrapyard who said without seeing it they probably would pay in region of £150-£200. I'm happy just to get rid of it and we can now move on.

DH is quite distraught about it because it was his first ever car that he bought because he wanted it, rather than what was affordable to us at the time, and he's had it for 6 years. I've told him to get a grip as it's only a lump of metal but I guess if someone told me I had to give up my peugeot I would be distraught myself. Also, it's not him who has had to budget for the damn thing which has been a drain on our resources for too long now. It wasn't too bad at the moment as it was MOT'd until the end of October, Taxed until end of November and insured until the end of February but all of those things had been paid for with the credit cards, which I am trying not to do this year, so would have had to come out of our savings. I reckon we would need to put at least £100 a month away. It's just a shame how much money we have thrown at it this year for nothing.

I cancelled the breakdown cover for it, which I only took out two weeks ago!! And they will refund £45 to my credit card.

I rang his insurers who said as there is a claim going through we have to stay with them, and the difference in price for the year is just £66 which they will refund to the credit card when I give them the go-ahead. As we paid on DH's credit card which is now clear this will give a credit balance....any idea how we can get this refunded? Is it as easy as ringing the card company? Or will we just have to try and spend £66 on his card?

    Today's spends:
£4.00 - oldest son to play football at local indoor footy centre with his mates.
£28.79 - petrol. Filled tank up (this has come out of my 'budget pot' so the money has already been taken off the balance)
    £5.39 - magazines x 5
    £3.22 - grocery shopping
£59.00 - magazine subscription to Closer*
£14.00 - Magazine subscription to Now*
(*I have paid via DD for the magazines, and am going to try and absorb them out of my everyday money rather than my savings, but if times get hard by the end of the month I might have to take the money from the savings account)

I did quite well with the magazine subscriptions and went via Quidco.
    1. Now - cover price £1.30. Subscription price = £14 per quarter. Quidco offer £4 for a direct debit. Overall Price = £52 (saving on cover price of £67.50 = £15.60)
    2. Closer - Cover price £1.30. Subscription price = £59 for year. Quidco offer was 15% for a new customer. Overall price = £50.15 (saving of cover price of £67.50 = £17.35).
Thus total saving of both = £32.95 per year. I just hope they both track correctly and I have done my sums right!

I'm hoping this will keep me away from the magazine aisles. I have promised myself that I can buy those two magazines each week but it still involves me having to go to the magazine aisles, whereby if I am getting them delivered I shouldn't have to go anywhere near....

I'd forgotten you live in Bradford too, Floozie! :T I agree that it's not safe to be cycling round here - crazy drivers as well as the vice. I've been using my pink card for a year or two, but only found out this week that I could load it up with money. Do you know you get bus miles at 1p per £1 spent on the card? Wonder if they have increased their prices twice this year to compensate ...

Ooooh Floozie you've been a bad girl! 5 magazines and two annual subscriptions in one day. I don't feel quite so bad about my recent splurges now. Tis nice to know I'm not the only one that has the occassional bad moment, fortunately not involving Parking Enforcement Officers or slapping.

I knew I could get bus miles but I'm not getting excited seeing how I have to spend £100 to earn £1. It will take me four months to earn a one way ticket! Still, at least they are 'trying' to give something back to the passengers *guffaw*...I think it's a real cheek charging £1.80 minimum fare

Magazines are my only real vice at the moment and I have tried and failed to give them up. As soon as I see Kerry Katona's fat gut hanging over her bikini bottoms or a picture of Jordan and Peter, I just have to buy them! MY NAME IS FLOOZIE AND I AM A CELEBRITY GOSSIP JUNKIE.
