On the Veg debate, I wondered if any of you guys know why dirty potatoes last so much longer than the washed pre-packed ones from a supermarket?
I bought some before Christmas from the local farm shop and I am still using them today, they make the most lovely mash!
Is there any scientific reason or am i just being dumb in not knowing this in the first place? I have kept them in exactly the same place as I would have if they were supermarket ones (dark cupboard away from onions!).
Could this be a good OS moneysaver??Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new...... Albert Einstein0 -
maybe the ones from the farm shop have spent less time out of the ground
the supermarket ones could have been around for weeks before you bought themI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. I buy both, i prefer fresh, i think they taste better, but i always keep a load of frozen veg in the freezer so i know i always have it here.

On a recent thread about potatoes someone said that supermarket ones could be almost a year old at times!
Anyway, peas get frozen within an hour of picking, I think, so that makes them fresh enough for me. Sweetcorn I have frozen except for the season when I get them in my organic veg box. So pretty much everything else is fresh, local, and in season.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Normally buy Fresh veg in season..but usually carrots, occasional mushrooms, lettuce, cucumber, toms, spuds, cabbages, swedes, onions, parsnips and either cauliflower or brocolli-whatevers cheapest  I dont buy organic, unless its reduced.
Always have in the freezer: peas, sweetcorn/corn on cob and mixed peppers/leeks for stews etc
The frozen veg is more for stews/curries or extras with chips or southern fried chicken night...HM of course..LOL.
As a whole I dont like frozen veg as I find them tasteless and watery.....but i suppose frozen veg is better than no veg

Supermarket spuds are kept in a chilled warehouse for upto 18 months "before" being used in shops, this is something I know when I knew someone who worked for the firm suppling Tescos their spuds - so its better to buy local "fresh" spuds as you know they last longer.
For me - I tend to buy frozen peas, veg mix as I live alone and cannot get though big portions of veg (I tried!) But I will buy the brolli fresh, Sweet spuds from Lidl (never will get them tesco again as they were rotten after 2 days on the shelf).0 -
I am bit of both. As I keep peas, carrotts, beans and broccoli in the freezer.
Potatoes, Lettuce and cucumber and cabbage are all bought fresh. An an odd fresh carrot for when I making spag bog. As frozen shop bought cabbage is grim.
Even though I plan my meals I still prefer to use frozen. Just the way I am a little lazy as no prep.
But frozen is the next best thing to fresh. Most potatoes are stored for months on end how do you think that you get baking potatoes in new potato season.
Anything that is washed will go off quicker. Most carrots you get in the supermarket are washed and they go off quicker then ones that have not been washed. Also if you see the way they wash them they get bashed about which must bruise and break the skins so starts the decaying process quicker.

I buy both. I read somewhere that 'fresh' veg is not always so fresh and frozen can be fresher as it is frozen very quickly after picking. I try to buy fresh from local stores as they usually buy from local growers. Supermarkets transport veg/fruit from all over so it could be a while since it was picked.Books - the original virtual reality.

My very odd toddler likes cooked peas and sweetcorn in a bowl as a snack.
I don't really use them for anything else, and I buy them frozen.
Everything else is fresh from our local shop. It varies. Mostly organic and local but not always.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0
