    Hi sam :)

We have a recent poll on using fresh or frozen vegetables and the thread includes lots of comments about which and why that I'm sure will be of help to you, so I have added your query on to it.

    Hope This Helps :)

We buy frozen pea's and Brocoli, but other than that fresh seems to be cheaper but I have to blanch it and freeze it as it would go off before we could use it.

I recently bought one of those pre-packed stew pack veggies, for 50p'ish and chops all those up and blanched it. It made five servings.

I buy fresh for most things except for peas and sprouts which I buy frozen. I'm the only one who eats sprouts so it's easier to just take a few out of the freezer when I fancy them.

I know it's not very OS but I buy tinned sweetcorn  as I find frozen sweetcorn is a bit tougher and not as sweet and tender. (I buy it in water, not in sugar BTW).

Frozen veg is pretty good since it's normally frozen within a short time from being picked. Unless you can get to a good greengrocers or market "fresh" veg is often not very fresh at all. I once saw tomatoes actually rotting on the shelves of the store in the village where my parents live.

I tend to have frozen peas, spinach, green beans and broad beans. The rest I buy fresh, either from Aldi or the local grocery store which has a fantastic selection of fresh fruit and veg including fennel, tamarind, chillies, corriander, about 4 different types of yam, plantain and quite a few things that I don't even know what they are. I'm planning to do a bit of experimenting with some of their produce at some point. Currently too skint to risk wastage.

We have tinned beans (for when I don't wanna soak 'em), tinned baked beans, chopped tomatoes and sweetcorn. Frozen spinach & peas. Everything else is fresh - either from the organic box or the supermarket... the three fruit and veg places near us all have open fronted stores with the fruit/veg on display... on is on an "A" road and the other two are "B" roads, I'm not fond of walking down them and don't want to buy anything that's been sitting there...

There is a farmer's market but it is Sunday morning and we're rather busy then.
  • which is better?

was having a discussion with soon to be sil about the pro's and cons of fresh and frozen veg, she thinks that frozen veg is worthless so to speak where i believe it can be better than the "fresh" stuff.

frozen veg is frozen at the time of picking (in most cases) who knows how long fresh veg has been cut unless its from your own garden...

Personally i prefer fresh, but with things like peas and sweetcorn, i think frozen tastes fresher - if you see what i mean!!

The majority of frozen veg now is frozen very shortly after being picked.

The majority of fresh veg will be picked well before it will be eaten.

For a lot of things I'd rather have frozen veg, especially if it's out of season.
  • Personally for lack of waste it's frozen normally here.
