OS Vegetables, whats best fresh or frozen?

I've been tending to buy some of my veggies frozen rather than fresh because the £/kg is lower. For example, I can get Tesco Everyday Value frozen broccoli for £1.11/kg, while the fresh broccoli is £1.40/kg. However, I have been wondering today whether this is a fair comparison as it is possible that some of the frozen weight could actually just be ice or excess water. Has anyone tested this?
Ideally, I would like to run an experiment starting with an equal weight of fresh broccoli and frozen broccoli, then cook them both and weight each at the end to see if it is still the same.
Of course, the same debate is open on other vegetables, I've just been thinking a lot about broccoli lately. :rotfl:0 -
I think a lot depends on the time of year and the weather.I have frozen stuff in my freezer during bad weather as there is no point going out in the snow or rain to buy veg if you can help it.
I prefer fresh but I'm not a purist about it.I also have tinned stuff for emergencies.At the end of this month I have a few days in hospital coming and when I come out I'm certainly not lugging veg around. I also freeze YS stuff if I see some at a reasonable price .Best veg to freeze is onions I bought 10 red onions reduced to 35p a few weeks ago and came home and sat and peeled and diced them.Once frozen they are there for when I only need a few for a casserole or stew.I like to have onions ready to cook with and once its done they seem to last ages and I don't lose any by them growing shoots.I also dice and freeze peppers and mushrooms for casseroles.My freezer is great for saving me cash as I have very rarely thrown fruit or veg out.If it doesn't go in the freezer it will end up in soups or a crumble.I made a rhubarb crumble last weekend from rhubarb some one gave me about 4 months ago.washed chopped and frozen it was delicious when defrosted its only been in suspended animation anyway:):)

For me, I only use fresh for things like sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower. I prefer frozen for peas and spinach. Sweetcorn I do love on the cob fresh but also use frozen for general dishes, and tinned salad corn too. Similarly carrots I prefer fresh, but also use tinned baby carrots in casserole type things.
Parsnips if roasting I can't see a difference, I keep a bag of them in the freezer for out of season times I want them with a roast dinner if not again I prefer fresh.
For me, the big thing comes down to texture and I find I prefer some crunch to certain veg. Plus I also like to snack on raw veg like cauli and carrot etc or indeed put things through the juicer. I've never had any luck with frozen veg for juicing in the same way as frozen fruit.
