For sprouts you are going to cook, let the sprout grow only as long as the seed. For sprouts you will eat raw (except wheat) let them grow up to 2-3 inches. Expose mature alfalfa, wheatgrass, buckwheat or sunflower sprouts to indirect sunlight for 4-5 hours. As they turn dark green their vitamin A content dramatically increases. (This is an important step, for if you don't, your sprouts will have only about 1 percent of this vitamin's RDA. Don't expose bean sprouts to sunlight as this will give them an unpleasant bitter taste.)

Hiya,
Found this thread only today. I love my mung bean sprouts, always got jars of em on the go in my airing cupboard.
I buy mine from Wallis Seeds - no web site - but email address is ; wallis.seeds@virgin.net for copy of catalogue.
You regular sprouting seeders will know your suppliers, but thought I'd give you Wallis' prices;
Adzuki Bean 5gm £0.60 10gm £1.00
Alfalfa 10gm £0.54 30gm £1.26
Broccoletti 1gm £0.60 2.5gm £1.28
Brown Lentils 5gm £0.56 10mg £1.00
Clover Red 5gm £0.49 10mg £0.73
Fenugreek 50gm £0.69
Linseed 5gm £o.39 10mg £0.63
Mung Bean 15gm £0.65 50mg £0.85
Mustard 50mg £0.69
Jaba Radish 25gm £0.98 100gm £1.76
Rape 30gm 30gm £1.00
I don't know what half of these are, and haven't got the time to compare prices from other cat's. But you'll know!!
I order flower and veg seeds from them cos their prices are much lower than those from the big name companies:grouphug: A smile, a 'please' and a 'thank you' cost nothing0 -
be careful of getting mould if you use the airing cupboard. Seeds must be rinsed a lot with fresh water. Best on the draining board and handy
(Not you, dontskipit, you know what you are doing)
are wallis seeds organic?0 -
Holsale go with alfalfa and radish at first. They are quick and easy. Then try the sunflower and maybe fenugreek. I am not a fan of sprouted chickpeas and I personally didn`t like the buckwheat so it isn`t worth me doing them. The mung beans should be successful. Good luck
Had quiche with toms, cucumber and raddish/alfalfa sprouts today. Absolutely lovely and is tremendously helpful with the monthly budget during this seasonal roots time0 -

my local wholefood shop sells alfalfa seeds quite cheaply, something like 50g for 31p :T
i really liked the wheat spouts, i will definately do those again...
is it ok to let them grow longer than the length of the seed itself? i ,mean, the ones you get in the shops are long and i like that kind of taste so that's what i'm wantingfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
I've joined the club!
I've had some alfalfa seeds in water overnight. Going to go and rinse them in a minute. Slightly worried my jar is too small (honey jar) so I only put a teaspoon full in this time.
Can't wait.
Oh that's what I was going to ask. Does everyone just use water from the tap? Or is cooled boiled water or filtered/bottled water best to eliminate any toxins in the water supply.I've been lucky, I'll be lucky again. ~ Bette Davis0 -
My first harvest. Yay.
We had it in a chow mein styley meal. It was yummy. Going to get some more started in a minute.I've been lucky, I'll be lucky again. ~ Bette Davis0 -

My local Indian greengrocer sells fresh mung bean and mixed lentil and bean sprouts in sealed bags. Some health food stores do as well (usually in the fridge).
Also, indian grocery shops are probably the cheapest for dried mung beans and lentils for sprouting.
I love eating ryevita spread with hummas and topped with alfalfa sprouts.0
