so how about some sprout recipes?

i'm just going to go do my first rinse on mine i've got chickpeas and barley on the go

i bought a set of three different plastic containers meant for cereal and stuff they have a small circular hole and lid on one side and a sprinkle/shaker style bit on the other side with a lid. i thought the shaker bit would be brilliant as the seeds won't fall through so i can just tip it and allow it to drain instead of messing with a glass jar and mesh :T

  • Erm, think I may have gone wrong somewhere? The mung beans went in last Sunday. They've all sprouted a little bit but seem to have stopped. The shoots are ony 2-5mm long. I rinse them twice a day and leave the jar upside down on the draining board, but they seem to have stopped!

I know they're not going to be the same as supermarket bean sprouts, but these don't even look similar :(

  • alfietinker the bigger seeds need a lot more rinsing than twice a day also try putting the jars on a draining angle rather than upside down. I used to wedge my jars on small nailbrush or similar.

Buckwheat and sunflower are ready this morning, harvested and in the fridge. Radish soaking ready to start with alfalfa this evening. The mung brans are about 1" long and in weight training with 4 pebbles on the cover. They will be ready to harvest in a day or so. I`ll be moving their tray to the top layer with the alfalfa on the bottom this evening.

We`ll be having stir fry greens and garlic today with a handful of buckwheat and sunflower sprouts thrown in at the end

You don`t need to go mad with recipes. Many of the seeds are lovely raw on a sandwich with something else (peanut butter, tuna, cheese etc). The bigger beans are lovely lightly stir fried

kittie where do you buy your alfalfa seeds from? I love these but can't seem to find a place to get them.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I think beanfreaks also sell them but I think they are more expensive. I only use 2 desertspoons at a time

i was very disappointed with my chickpeas. they're supposed to be
nutty and lovely mine were weird tasting and the bean it self never
got soft when you ate them they just tasted like eating dried beans
    (not very nice!)

the barley didn't sprout but then i found out that pearl barley won't
so i'll have to see if i can find proper barley to try

the wheat i used was gorgeous! sweet and crunchy. ate some raw (dd
even asked to have some ;-)

we steamed them with some broccoli and that was nice. think they'd go
very well in a salad or a sandwich, maybe tuna salad

i tried some haricots but the whole house smelled of wind for a few
days so just threw those away (though they sprouted fine)

i have some mung beans i'm going to try next

    any pointers?

I have some aduki beans on the go - very disappointing as 1 week in, half of them have sprouts about 1 cm long. I suppose they need more water?

Anyway - found a new health food shop in town today and have bought a pack of organic alfalfa seeds (99p) which I'm told will be ready in 3 days. Will go and source a smaller jar and a new pop sock and start again :D

I had good intentions and actually bought some alfalfa to sprout but I just end up growing it with the cress and putting it in egg mayo or salads...

I really should have a go doing it properly.
