you can either sprout them, in which case you just rinse them but don't leave them soaking....mine take about a week, and I rinse them twice a day and drain all of the water out.
Or you can use them as you would dried beans ,in which case you soak them over night...they are good in casseroles and stews.
I do both and they are lovely and nutritious, (can't remember how to spell it),whichever way you have them.Wombling £457.410 -
Thanks!

Ok i've decided to give this a go as it sounds brill. I've had some wheat sprouting for a couple of days and its got roots on and a teeny sprout. I've been eating it and its lovely and sweet.
I'm going to do it on a slightly larger scale so I have a few different types of seeds/grains ready at any time. However i've been looking on websites for ideas to make my own sprouter and all the pictures so grass like plants that are an inch long, I thought we were supposed to eat them around day 4, they wont be that long at all!
Am I eating them too early? Anychance of some more pics from people who know what they are doing!
Thank you0 -
I'm on my first lot and have read that the process takes 4-6 days after which mung beans should be 1"-2" long. But I think it varies between beans, eg afalfa sprouts should only grow 1/2", beyond which they become tough.
I don't have a digital camera working at the moment, but I found lots of pictures on Google Images by typing in 'Sprouting Mung Beans'.
Hope this helps.
Annie
PS Can't wait to see how mine have come on when I get in tonight!!! It's Day 4!!!0 -
What a coincidence, I never saw this thread but got a multi-tiered sprouter thing from freecycle yesterday! Will definitely have a go now, too. Has anyone done mustard or brocolli yet? Do they taste good?
Racy - don't want to cause offense by offering unwelcome advice but I was reading very recently that alfalfa sprouts can inhibit the immune system and can contribute to inflammatory arthritis and lupus. The seeds contain an amino acid called "canavanine" which can be toxic when taken in quantity.ottospasm wrote:Was wondering if anyone has ever sprouted linseeds/flax seeds? I was going to start a thread to ask about sprouting and found this. Good interesting stuff here. What i wanted to know was wether or not to soak them overnight before doing the rinse and drain thing.
I have a box of organic sprouting seed mix from Holland and Barret (250g for £1.69). There are 2 bags inside, one has just alfalfa and the other a mix of aduki, mung and three others (cant remember without getting up and looking). It says on the back of the box though to just rinse and drain from the start and nothing about soaking. I was really unsure what to do but everwhere i have looked on the internet said to soak so thats what ive done.
I have 2 jars which i done at teatime, one with alfalfa and the other with the mix. Im very excited to see how it goes. I have been growing cress recently and where it says on the the packet you will have cress in i think its about 7-10 days its been ready in about half that. Within 12 hours the seeds have sprouted and are growing, its amazing how quick they grow. Im always peeking at them!!
Would i be able to eat the cress seeds then at a day or two old before they grow tall?
Im really looking forward to feeding my parrot some sprouts as i remember some time ago reading that they are really good for birds.0 -
Yes just as i thought i have sprouts!!
The alfalfa doesnt seem to be doing much but the mixed batch has many sprouts on them in what is less that 24 hours.
Ive been and bought more seeds today, the normal sort which should be planted. I hope im right in assuming its ok to do the same thing with these.
Ive got beetroot, radish, brussel sprout, cabbage and tomato. In our local Nettos all veg and flower seeds are just 19p per pack (not reduced but normal low price). There were many others i could have got but didnt know which are best so just got those.0 -
I've got some mung beans on the go. That's for the inspiration everyone!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0
