Woolies - closing down sale tomorrow (11/12/08)

A week ago I popped into the Molesey (small) branch - quite busy long queues.
Today popped into the big Basildon branch (but nothing like the huge Beckton (E.London) shed.)
Basildon, with just another 10% off compared with last week's discounts, looked like the locusts has swept through. Interesting to see that 30% discount could clear the shelves. (I bought a couple of pairs of "Stika soles" (wow).
If you need it and will use it within 18 months, it is probably worth buying anything imported. With the pound down 20% against the trade weighted foreign currencies, we won't be seeing these prices again.0 -
i wonder who'll be next for the chop? Boots, Smiths, Bodyshop, PC World????
any suggestions. We are the change we wish to see.0 -
I popped into the Sheldon (Birmingham) branch this morning - there were huge queues and only had a quick look around as parking ticket was for just under an hour (thank you to the nice lady who let me have her space and ticket). I bought a couple of kids coats with 30% off (didnt want to risk waiting longer in case they sold out), a pack of boys vests also with 30% off (would have bought more but they didnt have the right size) and half a dozen rolls of birthday gift wrap the majority was 50p a roll and there was one marked up at 25p which went through the till at 15p.
Hope to pop into Solihull tomorrow if I get time.
Would like to wish any Woolworths staff reading this all the best.0 -
popped into my local woolies today and it was rubbish, dh picked up a few toys thinking hes gotten a bargain as had 20% off them, but he was still charged more than the RRP
i think PC world will be next, £30bn in debt, not far off what woolies oweWins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0 -
The government are stepping in, they (or rather us) are saving the pension scheme. Less than 1 in 5 of the workers are in this, but I bet the senior managers who failed to save Woolworths will get hefty pensions supported from our taxes - which does not seem very fair.0

I would bet on WHSmiths as well, although I have found they are competitive on books with Amazon etc I can't see how it would be sustainable in the long term when you factor in the extra costs of staff & shop premises etc.0 -
currys i reckon0

DSG (Currys, Dixons, PC World) are in trouble. Don't see them going under as their online operations are decent, but I can see them closing some stores and cutting jobs in the New Year.
Expensive television leads (that make no difference) and five-year warranties just aren't being bought as much, and they make a lot of profit from them.0
