This is all very sad.
I remember fond memories of my teenage years - going down to Woolworths on a Saturday afternoon to get all the latest 7" singles, and having a right good rake through the bargain bins.
I feel as if I've lost part of my childhood. It will be difficult walking past the local Woolworths in a few months time when it's closed down.0 -
It sounds to me that everyone is trying to wish another store to go under! It is this sort of scaremongering that brings companies/banks down and that exacerbates the problem. There are people who have jobs in all these stores, you should think of them before trying to see which store can go under!
I am certainly not wishing anybody else goes under as for the consumer it can only be a good thing to have as many choices as possible to purchase goods from be it in High Street or online but do you seriously think the High Street as we know it has got a long term future when caught in the cross fire from the big supermarkets & the online retailers! :huh:0 -
We all like a bargain, unfortunately there are some that turn into savage animals at the site of a reduced ticket.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0

The big supermarkets like ASDA and Tesco have become far too powerful. The same thing has already happened in America with Wal-Mart, in many small cities and towns they have put everyone else out of business.0

*sighs* It really does make me sad to hear that staff are being abused... Its ridiculous and unexcusable behaviour especially when you consider these people are looking like their out of a job for xmas.
This morning was a bit misleading but any publicity is good publicity right? At least I'm sure that's how DeLoitte will have seen it. The store in Dingwall had quite a bit of stock left so will be hopeful to see what happens0 -
I had my first Saturday job in Woolies in Croydon when I was 16, Im now 48 but I remember it like it was yesterday. I used to work on the sweet counter, and there were always regulars who came in for certain sweets every Saturday. I used to like getting the stock from the stock room and "enjoying" a few sweets while I was there!! Good luck to anyone working there.0

But is this not what always happens?
More so sad that it is being done "in the face" when these people are losing what could lead to everything?
If the Internet is to rule the roost that will only bring out more of the BASE IN HUMANITY ........far easier to abuse the faceless and nameless (it happens now to call centre employees.....and these will be your new shop sales persons...and they already face horrendous abuse)
This is only the beginning ...........and that leads to anarchy...thank the heavens for all those taser guns already on order! :rolleyes:The years starts today ....0 -
The Woolies stores are being run by the Hilco consortium on behalf of the receivers. I had to work under Hilco under the Focus DIY closedowns last year.
The method of discounting and signs look exactly the same as what we used. We used to get customers nearly assualting us all the time. Luckily for me, I'm 6'4 and can take care of myself but my till ops bore the brunt of the verbal abuse at the checkouts.
Hilco only care about themselves and not about the staff beneath them or that they are 'controlling'. The information comes out too slow and too late in most cases. I do feel for the Woolies staff. Unfortunately, staff are always the last in the queue for information and money.
At my new place of work, it was sad to see Woolies branded items now arriving (I now work for one of the Bargain chains, it's Madness) . Boxes of Worth It chocs at 49p. Pic'n'mix Dolly Mixtures for 99p etc.
Woolies was 99 years old. End of an institution...RIP0
